Via Verde groundbreaking a milestone

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan were among the many distinguished guests on hand for the ground breaking of Via Verde, which contains the 100,000th unit of affordable housing financed through the city’s housing plan since 2003. Comment.

Ground breaking for P.S. 47 playground

Last Thursday, April 29, city officials and school administrators gathered to break ground on a gorgeous new million-dollar playground behind P.S. 47 in West Farms. The space has hardtop surfaces that are covered with colorful paintings, a fancy jungle gym structure with multiple slides and monkey bars, a basketball court, a small playing field, a track, an outdoor stage, and two large murals of Sesame Street characters. But the most interesting development of all: students of the school helped plan and design every aspect. Comment.

OMS to monitor New York Organic Fertilizer Co. in Hunts Point

The Point Economic Development Corporation hosted a community forum on Thursday, April 29 with representatives of a company that operates a 24-hour bilingual hot line to monitor odors within a one-mile radius of the New York Organic Fertilizer Plant in Hunts Point. Comment.

Library’s security system nabs bike thieves

Thieves and vandals who have stolen bikes from outside the Van Nest Library in the past, or graffitied its walls, will now have some trouble in their efforts. A brand new set of high-tech security cameras are now up and running both inside and outside the library. Comment.

City will clean properties of graffiti at no charge

While local businesses, homeowners, and even some officials are confused about the details of the new city graffiti law, Mayor Bloomberg’s office says that the new law does not involve any fine whatsoever for the city to come clean graffiti. Comment.
