I was browsing through the New York section at Barnes and Noble when I noticed another book about Yankee Stadium. Since I was once a tour guide there, it immediately caught my attention. What is interesting about this book is that it’s not predominantly about the Yankees. It’s about the stadium and has a variety of area photographs that are rarely, if ever, seen. Read more…

The Academy of Mount St. Ursula is hosting a Christmas Flea Market on Saturday, December 12, in the school cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The idea for the flea market was developed by the school principal, Lisa Harrison, and the director of Development/Alumnae Relations,. Anna Ramos. In keeping with the school’s theme of Spirit of Community and Family for the month of December, this event will bring community members into the school building for an opportunity to buy poinsettias, baked goods, new and gently used toys, games, clothes, books, CDs and more. Community Action

The State of New York, facing its deepest financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s, is also enduring an equally profound, if not greater, challenge: the loss of integrity within its electoral and legislative systems. The combination of these two dilemmas is devastating, and it appears neither will be resolved quickly. Even worse, there is little evidence that the willpower to face reality exists among the Empire State’s elected officials. Read more…

Do You Remember

Earlier this week I was thinking about the statue of Archbishop John Hughes located on the Rose Hill Campus of Fordham University. This led to thoughts of the man who sculpted the statue. Oddly, he was a Confederate soldier from Virginia who had relocated to the Bronx after the Civil War. Although he was not trained as a sculptor, he became somewhat renowned in that field and was welcomed into the ranks of the Society of American Sculptors and the Architectural League. As his fame grew, he was also inducted as an associate of the National Academy of Design. Read more…
