Monroe Baseball Alum Debuts For Twins
Although efforts to reach out to him have been unsuccessful, the Bronx is happy to see another former baseball star achieve success in the major leagues, as Randy Ruiz, who graduated from Monroe High School in 1996, where he played on the dominant team led by coach Mike Turo, has been called up to the main roster to play for the Minnesota Twins. Called up as a designated hitter, Ruiz is already performing well with a .325 average, picking up 13 hits and 2 doubles in only 40 at bats since being called up to the young team. We hope to have more on the Bronx star in the coming weeks.
Preston Volleyball And Soccer
The Preston have released schedules for both their soccer and volleyball programs. This year, minus stars Katie Dziuma and Carolyn Damo, the Panthers hope to defend their Bronx and Archdiocesan City Championship in volleyball when it opens the season on Friday, September 12 at Our Lady of Victory Church, followed by games against Maria Regina on Monday, September 15 and St. Catharine’s on Wednesday, September 24, before enjoying their home opener on Friday, September 26, against Aquinas. Over in soccer, the girls open their season on Wednesday, September 10, at Spellman before opening their second season at their new Throggs Neck Houses home on Balcolm Avenue with a game on Friday, September 12, against Maria Regina.
Boxing In The Bronx
The Juan Laporte Boxing Gym will be holding a boxing show and street festival on Saturday, August 30, on Dawson Street, between Rogers Place and Longwood Avenue. The official weigh-in for the fight starts at 12:30 p.m. with the actual fight portion of the program taking place at 2:30 p.m. The event is sanctioned by U.S. Boxing and is sponsored by El Maestro, Inc., and the United Hispanic Construction Workers.
