Bronxites pound it out in the ring

All the world was a boxing ring when Bronx boxers emerged victorious at the 81st Annual Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tournament kicked off on Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18 at the WAMU Theater at MSG.

The best amateur boxers in the New York City metro area put up their dukes for two nights of fights: dancer vs. actress, teacher vs. student and other thrilling match-ups taking place in front of thousands of fans at the world’s greatest arena.

A total of 33 championship bouts were held over the two days, featuring 66 men and women boxers and two Bronxites, who, like the careers of world champion boxers such as Emile Griffith, Jose Torres, Floyd Patterson, Howard Davis and Riddick Bowe, may find the annual tournament as a launching pad for their future pro careers.

The best bout on the second night of action saw Laura Ramirez, a Truman High School student from the South Bronx PAL, putting on a clinic in her win over, two-time Gloves Champ, Ruth O’Sullivan with a 4-1 decision. Ramirez mixed power punches along with punches that scored well and was, also, chosen the tournament’s most outstanding female boxer.

Livingston Joseph was selected as the most outstanding male boxer.  The Bronxite won the 141 lb. open on the final night of action in front of an audience that included past Golden Glove champions Emile Griffith, Iran Barkley, Junior Jones, Mark Breland and Jake LaMotta.
