Regis Raiders crush Spellman Falcons at their home, 11-1

It was a tough day to be a Spellman baseball fan.

The Falcons hit a roadblock when facing the Regis Raiders during a 11-1 rout at home on Sunday, April 27.

The game started as an exciting pitcher’s duel for the first three innings, giving Spellman a chance at coming away with the win, until it all fell apart in the top of the 4th.

Spencer Ryan led off the top of the fourth inning with a sharp single for the Regis Raiders, followed by a walk to Brian Wenzler and a double to centerfield by Brendan Graham, enabling both runners to score. Sean O’Connor singled to right to put runners on the corners for Tony Negrin, who drilled a single into centerfield, for an RBI. After Stefan Botarelli walked, Mark Skrapits hit a double, scoring two. For Spellman starter Joe Carfora, in a 5-0 hole, it would only get worse.

Mike Romano hit a sacrifice to the outfield, and with what should have scored only one, ended up with an error by the first baseman, allowing two runs to score.

Down by seven, the Spellman Falcons tried to get a rally going. After Mike Ruzzo walked, Anthony Impellzerri was able to reach on an error by the shortstop that should have been a double play. Instead there was one on and one out. Mike Walsh hit a double up the middle to put two runners into scoring position, but, with two outs, Tom Faciglia grounded out to the second baseman to end the threat.

The top of the sixth began in much the same way the 4th did, as Juan Hernandez, the third pitcher for Spellman, received no help from the infield.  Lead off batter, Joseph Schade reached first on an error by the second baseman, Ruzzo. Botarelli was walked and an error on the shortstop on a play by Skrapits, another run would score.  A wild pitch by Hernandez led to two additional runs scored and Regis led 10-0.

Spellman would score its only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning, as Impellzerri singled with two outs. He scored on another single from Mitios.  Regis would score another run in the 7th and Spellman could not muster a comeback.
