Coming dangerously close to a lackluster 2008, Clinton has overcome poor losses to Walton and a tough 4-3 defeat at the hands of Lehman to completely turn their season around.
On the heels of a four-game winning streak, Clinton enjoyed a strong holiday break, beating out 25 other teams for a spot in the finals of the Monroe Holiday Tournament.
Although they lost the finals to Monroe, on Thursday, April 24, a strong effort that saw both teams tied going into the 6th inning, before the Eagles rallied for 5 runs, proved that Clinton is a tough contender, as the playoffs approach.
And now, back from break, Clinton is continuing its strong showing, increasing its regular season win streak to six, with victories over Samuel Gompers and a more recent 4-2 victory over Evander Childs.
Clinton went into Evander on Thursday, May 1, with a 7-3 record, and in 3rd place in the Bronx A East Division. In the past, Clinton has either been tied for first or a close second to Monroe. It was their mission to get back in good standing with the rest of the league.
Behind Arjenis Carmona’s two-run homerun and a two-RBI double from Kevin Hernandez, Clinton was able to jump to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning and then break a 2-2 tie in the top of the 6th for the victory.
Holding Evander at bay was Nelson Colon, who threw 7 innings, allowing only 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 of which was earned, while striking out 4 for the win.
The win, coupled with a loss by Walton to Kennedy, pushed Clinton into a tie for second place. With only two games separating Clinton and Monroe in the standings, the remaining scheduled games could prove vital in terms of both the standings and the upcoming playoff seeding.
Clinton will face Kennedy and South Bronx early this week, at time of press, before again going against South Bronx at home on Thursday, May 8, and closing the season out with Monroe, first at home on Monday, May 12, and then at Monroe on Wednesday, May 14. All games will take place at 4 p.m.
