Engagement
Joseph and Donna Antico and Al and Denise Driscoll announce the engagement of their children, Lori Ann and Michael. The families were both present when Michael asked Lori to marry him. We are all so very happy for them and wish them the best of luck. A 2010 wedding is being planned. We love you both. As the years have come and gone, we’ve shared in your life with great joy and we thank God for you because you are a special boy! Graduation
Congratulations to my granddaughter, Jenny Di Girolamo, on her graduation from SUNY Purchase College. Jenny will receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts on May 16, 2008 and will celebrate with her family over the weekend. We are all so proud of you!
Obituary
Andre Galerne, who was a pioneer in the commercial deep sea diving industry died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, of natural causes in Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 81. There will be a Mass for him at St. Mary Star of the Sea at 10 a.m. this coming Friday, May 16, 2008, and burial of his ashes at Pelham Cemetery. Born in 1926 Paris, France Andre was recruited into the French Underground to fight against the German forces occupying France during World War 11. He took his first dive in 1943 using Le Prieur apparatus and worked closely with Jaques Yves Cousteau and Phillipe Taillez in the early days of the Aqua-Lung development. Later he honed his engineering skills at l’ecole Tee d’Aeronatique et de Construction Automobile. He holds four U. S. Patents on methodology and equipment advances in the industry and is recipient of many awards including Honors with appointments as Knight of the ‘French Legion de Honor’ for his service to his country in WW11; 1986 Lowell Thomas Explorer’s Club award; the 1988 NOGI Award for Distinguished Service from the Underwater Society of America;1993 Lifetime Achievement Award from Beneath The Sea, and many other awards. In 1959 he left France to start I.U.C. in Montreal, Canada and immigrated to the U.S. in 1962 where he formed the IUC Group here which comprised several diving companies and professional diving schools. He served as president of his company until 1996. Andre also headed the City Island Chamber of Commerce as chairman for many years. Galerne is further credited with starting several Hyperbaric treatment facilities that has inspired a new generation of medical personnel for the treatment of various diseases through oxygen therapy.
