Bronxites enter 31st annual arm wrestling contest

Bronxites, like Pelham Bay’s own Jason Hall, will have an opportunity to test their muscle once more when the New York Arm Wrestling Association hosts its 31st Annual New York City Big Apple Grapple Pro International Arm Wrestling Championship on Sunday, June 22, at the Jacob Javits Center.

Last year, Hall, took the 200-pound division title.  Now, Hall will have the opportunity to defend his title, as Bronxites and other arm wrestlers from throughout the world vie for his spot and a number of other division championships for amateurs and professionals, both male and female.

Over $5,000 Cash and prizes will be awarded along with custom Olympic-size medallions and trophies that will be presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each class.

The men’s division will be divided into six weight classes including 45+ and 55+ year old master categories and three left-handed classes, while the women’s division will be divided into three weight classes. Teams will also compete for a point tally in categories divided by borough, state, and country.

It is expected that over 100 arm-wrestlers will participate in the NYC Big Apple Grapple, coming from countries such as Turkey, Brazil, Russia, Germany, and the Republic of Georgia.

“This event draws the best pro talent in the world and has been named NYC Arm Wrestling’s event of the Century,” said Gene Camp, founder and president of the NYAWA.

The entry fee for the competition is $30 which includes a free sponsor t-shirt. Contestants must weigh-in between 9:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. that day with the competition expected to start at 1 p.m.

For those just looking to view the amazing spectacle of strength, general admission is $30 if Big Apple Grapple is mentioned at the door – otherwise $40 will be charged and the event is restricted to adults over 21 years old.

This year, the Big Apple Grapple is part of The Bar Show, which represents bars, nightclubs, and restaurants and features international flair bartending showmanship with contest judging by leaders in the spirits’ industry.  More information about this event can be found at www.newyorkbarshow.com
