On Monday, May 19, a special groundbreaking ceremony for the new Harry and Jeanette Weinberg/Webb Avenue Senior Residence was held with city officials, trustees, and friends in attendance. This new residence is Jewish Home’s third HUD Section 202 affordable senior housing development in the Bronx.
When completed, the new Webb Avenue building will have 71 one-bedroom apartments for low-income elders.
Tenants will benefit from the complete range of supportive and healthcare services provided by Jewish Home Lifecare, including short stay rehabilitation and therapies, skilled nursing, home health care, adult day care, social services, and a beautiful five-acre campus with award winning gardens.
“This new groundbreaking will allow our seniors to age in place, age gracefully, and age with dignity,” said Ken Sherman, Sr., vice-president of JHL’s Bronx Division, who added that Jewish Home Lifecare was the first nursing homes to provide senior subsidized housing.
Borough President Adolfo Carrion Jr. provided some of the funding for the new development, one of his many initiatives to improve the quality of life for Bronxites at all points in the age spectrum.
“We are making sure that every single element of this borough’s population is taken care of,” Carrion noted. “We take care of both ends of life. We honor and dignify ourselves by taking care of our seniors. This speaks to JHL’s work, an institution since 1848.”
Sherman said that Carrion goes above and beyond in his role as borough president in providing services for seniors and caring about their issues.
“It is inspiring as someone who provides human services in the Bronx to work with someone like Adolfo Carrion,” Sherman stated. “The Bronx is a supportive borough for the elderly, especially the poor elderly.”
Caryn Resnick, deputy commissioner of external affairs for the Department of Aging, also attended the groundbreaking ceremony, which took place indoors due to inclement weather.
Resnick presented Jewish Home Lifecare with proclamations from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and DOA commissioner Edwin Mendez-Santiago.
“We are delighted to support Jewish Home and celebrate the addition of your third [HUD 202 senior subsidized residence],” Resnick stated.
There are currently three senior residences within Jewish Home’s Harry and Jeanette Weinberg campus in the Bronx: The Riverdale House (the first HUD 202 unit), the Kenneth Gladstone Building (the second), and Kittay House, an independent living residence for seniors.
