Lady Governors go out strong

After a come-from-behind win over Lincoln advanced the Clinton Lady Governors (above) into the Elite Eight, the girls’ varsity softball team hit a snag on Tuesday, May 27, in a 4-1 loss to Madison.

Jazcelyn Pagan, who batted 2-for-2, scored the team’s only run in the 1st inning, on an error, but Ashley Icaza’s control problems (6 walks), coupled with a two-RBI double by Madison’s Brittany O’Brien, pushed the Lady Governors into a must-win situation against Curtis High School on Thursday, May 29, in a loser’s bracket battle.

Clinton took a 1st run, 3-0 lead, off a two-RBI double by Natasha Gonzalez, before Curtis’ Lauren Mattina settled down, while Clinton’s fielding errors resulted in the eventual loss and an elimination from this year’s playoffs.

Still, the Bronx champions went out with their heads held high, a 16-2 record on the season, and a positive outlook for the year ahead.
