Bronx Week 2008 continues celebrating Bronx success

From Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 22, dozens of activities will take place throughout the 61 plus neighborhoods of The Bronx to pay tribute to the progress and revitalization for the borough’s businesses, educational and cultural institutions and civic groups at this year’s Bronx Week celebration themed, “The Bronx is Up.”

“Once Again, we have lots to celebrate,” said Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr. “And Bronx Week is a great time to embrace your Bronx roots; and proudly proclaim you are from this great borough.”

Highlights from Bronx Week 2008, produced by The Bronx Tourism Council, include a business expo with a keynote address by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli; The Banker’s Breakfast with a keynote address by Governor David A. Patterson and remarks by Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert Lieber; a black tie function at Orchard Beach known as the famous Bronx Ball; a parade down Mosholu Parkway and a concert bringing some of New York city’s hottest acts like Nina Sky and Kat DeLuna.

 Thursday, June 12, 11 a.m.: Bronx Week Press Conference and the University Heights Bridge Centennial celebration, at Fordham Road by the Major Deegan Expressway.

Friday, June 13, 8:30 a.m.: Bronx Bankers Breakfast at the Marina del Ray – Carrion, BIC and the BOEDC host the largest networking events with over 400 of the city’s bankers, lenders and financial institutions get together to talk business.  Tickets required. Saturday, June 14, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Bronx Day at the NYBG – A day of musical entertainment, children’s activities, tram tours, raffle prizes, and more.  Tickets required. Contact Maritza Suarez at (718) 590-2502.

Wednesday, June 18, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Bronx Business Day Expo and Luncheon at the Villa Barone Manor – Carrion and the Bronx Chamber of Commerce present “The Bronx is Building,” showcasing the many construction items underway in the borough as well as the great diversity of product and services. Saturday, June 21, 6:30 p.m. – 11th Annual Bronx Ball – A welcome home tribute to Bronx-born celebrities during what is called the Bronx’ social event of the year.  For ticket information contact Janett Florindo at (718) 590-3949.

Sunday, June 22, 11 a.m. – Bronx Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony – Carrion unveils permanent, individual lamppost signs for the 2008 Bronx Walk of Fame inductees.

Noon: Bronx Day Parade at Mosholu Parkway – Bands, floats, and thousands of marchers make their way up Mosholu Parkway past a reviewing stand at Van Cortlandt Avenue East. 

1 p.m.: Bronx Food and Arts Festival at Mosholu Parkway South and Van Cortlandt Avenue East – Over 15 Bronx restaurants and 40 Bronx artists will showcase their work. Produced in association with the Bronx Council on the Arts.

1 p.m. – Bronx Day Concert at Mosholu Parkway South and Bainbridge Avenue – The grand finale to the Bronx Week featuring the best talent in the Bronx and much more.
