Engineers expand senior opportunities

For the third consecutive year, engineers from IBM visited Preston High School to inform the young women about opportunities available in engineering and to engage them in experiments to give them a better understanding of the different roles engineers can play. The visit began with an experiment called “The Superconductivity Challenge,” in which PHS students had the chance to discover how cooling certain materials to the temperature of liquid nitrogen can change their properties.

The Challenge workshop was followed by a presentation by Nick Donofrio, IBM executive vice president for Innovation and Technology and leader of IBM’s global technology strategy, who provided students with encouragement. In his address, Mr. Donofrio challenged the students to consider science, math, and technology careers and noted IBM’s interest in expanding the participation of women in these fields of research and industry.

The presentation was followed by a special reception for Preston High School students interested in science and technology fields.  Students spoke one-on-one with IBM engineers to further explore the possibilities presented earlier in the day.
