Teen summer camps present exciting array of amusements

Teen Trailways

Lenora Sealey M.S.W., director of the Teen Trailways, announces that a number of openings are still available for this summer.

The camp on wheels for teens entering 7th through 10th grades in September offers exciting day trips to beaches, state parks, lakes, sporting events, deep sea fishing, Broadway shows, water parks and more. There are late nights to amusement parks, comedy clubs, etc., special three-day away trips to Club Get-Away and 5- or 6-day site-seeing trips by age group unit to Virginia Beach (unit I) Toronto (unit II) and Florida/Disney World (unit III).

Teen Trailways runs June 30 to August 27 (four-week seasons are available.) Bus pick up and return at central pick up points are included in the camp fee all over the Bronx, Central Avenue and Bronx River Road, Yonkers and parts of Mt. Vernon.

Summer Karate Program

Louis Morales, head teacher of the Summer Karate and Self Defense Program of the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, announces that registration is taking place for the summer classes.

Classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for boys and girls in kindergarten through 2nd grades; from 6:30 7:30 p.m. for 3rd to 6th grades; from 7:30 9 p.m. for teens 7th to 12th grades and adults. 

Students have the opportunity to earn different belts, improve discipline and concentration, enjoy better health, fitness, improve self esteem, confidence, and learn self defense.

Classes start June 23 and are held on Mondays and Wednesdays. Classes run for eight sessions. Fees are $76 for members once a week, $81 for non-members once a week, $140 for members twice a week, and $145 for non-members twice a week for kindergarten to 6th graders.

For teens 7th to 12th grades and adults, fees for members are $80 once a week and $150 for twice a week, for non-members $45 for once a week and $160 for twice a week, plus $10 accident insurance and $30 for GI uniform.

Country Day Camp

It may be late in coming, but those hot days of summer will be here soon and the Country Day Camp of Mosholu Montefiore Community Center and it’s 125 acres rolling woodlands, streams, sports fields, three outdoor swimming pools, boating lake, fishing pond, biking trails, basketball courts, playgrounds and tennis courts will be calling to our city kids for a wonderful summer of outdoors small groups living the wonderful world of nature. 

The Country Day Camp serves boys and girls entering kindergarten through 6th grades in September with unique programs geared to each age groups interests and abilities.

Specialty areas with trained specialists for all age groups include arts and crafts, gymnastics, ceramics, puppetry/drama, dance, nature/pioneering, archery, tennis, all sports, karate, golf (brand new nine miniature hole golf course) mountain bike riding, music, reading/math (pull-out program) challenge course (12 station) and learn to swim.

The day camp program is broken down into age group units with special attention and programs for each group; Frosh is for boys and girls who will be entering kindergarten in September. Norwood is for boys and girls who will be entering 1st and 2nd grade in September.

Young Blazers is for boys and girls who will be entering 3rd and 4th grades in September 2008 and combines all the traditional day camp programs plus two trips out-of-camp each week to lakes, beaches, sporting events, educational activities and more.

A special late night is planned to Sesame Place Amusement Park in Longhorne, Pennsylvania and the season is highlighted with a three-day, two-nights trip to a sleep-a-way camp.

Blazers and Trail Blazers is for boys and girls entering 5th and 6th grades. Both units enjoy all the traditional day camp activities geared toward their age group plus three days a week of out-of-camp trips to sporting events, beaches, amusement parks, water parks, cultural events and much more. Both units enjoy a special three-day trip to a sleep-a-way camp and the Trail Blazers unit enjoys a special four-day trips to Washington for site-seeing by coach buses, in August.

Bus pick and return at stops near the home is included in the camp fee. Five stops are all over the Bronx, Central Avenue and Bronx River Road areas of Yonkers and certain stops in Mt. Vernon.

New Options Program

The New Options Program and Young Adult Internship Program are busy registering young men and women ages 16 to 21 years of age who are out of school (no longer attending)

The various programs offer two levels of General Equivalency Diplomas. Level one for those who do work between 5th and 8th grade and those who do work above the 9th grade.

The program also offers vocational job training skills in the fields of security job training and electrical security installation, plus full placements with paid stipends.

The program takes place at the Educational Counseling Center located at 3512 Dekalb Avenue just off Gun Hill Road.
