Success has capital ‘S’ at Salesian

While some things change, some things stay the same.  Success still starts with a big “S” just like that of the Salesian High School Athletic logo.

This past year after the varsity soccer team reached the City Championship game for the first time in school history, the Eagles started to bring home the hardware.

The Salesian Volleyball team made it seven in a row.  The Eagles continued to dominate the CHSAA Volleyball league by winning its seventh straight CHSAA title when it defeated Cardinal Spellman 3-1.  Seniors Matt Morel, Rich Foley and Sophomore Miguel Gallardo led the Eagles to victory 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-14.  The Seniors’ finished their career with a 42-4 record.

The Junior Varsity Basketball team, which included victories over Cardinal Spellman and Archbishop Stepinac, finished off a 16-6 season with an 82-64 victory over Monsignor Scanlan High School in the CHSAA “B” Championship.  Led by four freshmen, Bronxite Jason Alleyne, Morris Park’s Nick Sedia, St. Nicholas of Tolentine alum Kevin Punter and Michael Cacciato, the Eagles won their first Junior Varsity title since 2004.

And finally, overcoming what many thought would be a difficult season, the varsity tennis team swept Stepinac before going on to defeat Archbishop Molloy 3-1 on the grounds of the U.S. Open for its first CHSAA City Championship.

Sophomores Nick Davis, of Co-op City, and Pelham Bay’s Vinny D’Alessandro led the Eagles to victory in singles, while Pelham Bay’s Frank Eichner, a sophomore, teamed with senior Shane Thomas to put Salesian over the top for the title.

“Our team did great this year,” said coach Artie Schoenherr.  “I lost players this year and was left with a young squad.  It looked like it would be an uphill battle, but our young guys pulled us through.  It looks like we’ll have a good team for years to come.”
