Scanlan’s Sister Linda Bonasera dies

Sister Linda Bonasera, OP, a member of the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary, Sparkhill, NY, died on June 2 in Einstein Hospital. The entire Monsignor Scanlan High School community is deeply saddened by her loss.

Sister Linda, a local girl, was a graduate of St. Helena Elementary School and St. Helena High School, currently Monsignor Scanlan. Sister earned a BS in Elementary Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College; an MA in Mathematics from Villanova University and an Administration Certificate from Manhattan College.

Sister Linda joined the faculty in 1969. Thus began a 39 year period of professional and personal dedication to Monsignor Scanlan High School. In the early years, Sr. Linda taught Science and later Math. She enjoyed time outside the classroom and was involved in moderating a number of after school activities that included the health club, twirling and cheerleading.

In 1979, Sister became assistant principal for Academics, a position she held until her death. Sister had a passion for the school and its students. All student programs and teacher schedules were prepared by Sister. Over the years, Sister spoke with hundreds of students before creating a program that would best suit their needs.

Sr. Marie O’Donnell, principal, shared some fond memories of Sr. Linda when she spoke at Sister’s funeral Mass. “How can one describe the joy, professionalism, loyalty, sincerity, prayerfulness, love of community, family and friends that were all part of the person many of us came to know and love as Linda Jean.”
