Zodiacs Track Team tests Nike’s popular new styles

Recognizing the importance of working with the future generation of track stars, Nike had a van come out on Tuesday, July 22, at the Truman High School track to give runners from the Zodiacs Track Team an opportunity to try out a number of the popular sneaker company’s newest styles.

“Nike wanted our children’s suggestion and opinions of their sneakers,” said Zodiacs co-president Winston Dinkins, noting that the gesture said a lot about what the Co-op City based team has accomplished throughout the year.

In addition to allowing children to try on the various sneakers, complete with track spikes, Nike also provided Subway sandwiches, Gatorade, water and gifts for the kids.

“It was a great day to close out the outdoor season for those who will not be going to the nationals,” Winston continued.

The Zodiacs Track Team develops and trains girls and boys for track and field competition.  This training teaches them to be competitive and successful on a local and national level.

“We strive to enable the boys and girls to showcase their skills to potential college admissions and athletic department personnel,  particularly the major regional competitive meets,” Dinkins said.  “This exposure will give those athletes additional leverage in competing for college scholarships.”

The organization has taken a short hiatus from training, but are expected to be back in action during the last week of August, preparing for the indoor track season. Children interested in joining the Zodiacs will be notified in the coming weeks about an upcoming orientation for kids and their parents.

“Your children will be in good hands with over 30 years of history and experience,” said Dinkins.
