Carrion hosts job fair for Best Buy stores

Despite woeful news about the national economy, another large electronic store chain is betting on the Bronx to deliver in sales, while they deliver a much needed economic stimulus package: jobs for those who need them.

In an effort to bring even more jobs to the Bronx, Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr., the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, the Bronx Business

Solutions Center, and The Gateway Fast Track Unit will join Best Buy in hosting one of the borough’s largest jobs fairs involving just one employer.

Beginning on Wednesday, September 13 through October 18, Best Buy executives will be at the Bronx Business Solutions Center, located at E. 149 Street, conducting screenings, interviews, and possibly hiring up to 200 residents for new Bronx stores, the first to ever open in the borough.

Best Buy representatives note that a number of Bronx residents have been employed in their most local stores, located in Mount Vernon and Central Avenue. Now, Bronxites won’t have to travel far to work for one of the most well-known electronic stores in the country.

“We welcome businesses like Best Buy, who recognize they don’t have to look far for the skills they need in their employees,” Carrion noted. “I am sure they will be quite pleased with the quality of applicants they will meet.”

Although the six-week job fair is not limited to Bronx residents, looking to be good neighbors and take part in local initiatives that encourage hiring local residents, Best Buy, according to officials, is working hard to involve their local communities in the positive economic growth they provide, and think that there new stores will be assets to their stake in the retail electronics business.

“BOEDC is continuing to work with new retailers in the Bronx to ensure that Bronx residents are given first priority to the new jobs being created,” said Rafael Salaberrios, president of the BOEDC.

Best Buy will be hiring for two new stores planned to open in the Bronx in 2008 and 2009. Best Buy’s 400 E. Fordham Road location, a 42,000 square-foot facility, is scheduled to open in November of 2008, and a second 60,000 square-foot Gateway Center store, near the new Yankee Stadium, will open in the summer of 2009.

New employees can expect to be trained, first in the Fordham location, before many are transitioned to the Gateway Mall.

Those interested in the potential job opportunity can fill out an initial application on-line at www.bestbuy.com/careers, to ensure a speedy process during the face-to-face interviews.

Interviews will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., unless an evening appointment is scheduled.
