Kennedy takes home opener vs. New Utrecht

After a season-ending loss in the quarterfinals of the PSAL title round last November, Kennedy H.S. set out this season with something to prove. With 13 out of 22 starters returning from last year, they came out to play with a renewed spirit. On Friday, September 5, Kennedy hosted New Utrecht in front of a lively packed house. In the first quarter, Michael Washington scored one of his two touchdowns. This, along with a successful conversion and a defense-packed second quarter, saw Kennedy up 8-0 at the half.

During the second half, New Utrecht’s offense surged, scoring two touchdowns, both by Imron Barakat, but without the conversions they would only post 14 points.

Kennedy, however, would score another and complete a successful conversion putting them up by two which would be all they needed to win the first game of the season, 16-14.

Head coach Alex Vega was happy with the win but was focusing more towards the rest of the season. “Our goal is to win it all,” said Vega, “We came too close last year and got a big disappointment. The boys are ready to play and work as hard as they can to take the title this year.”
