Seniors volunteers the of Morris Park Senior Garden were proud to show off their garden, the result of hard labor the past few months, featuring a zucchini reaching a height of almost five feet, and still growing.
The seniors have run the garden, located on the corner of Paulding and Sacket avenues, for about ten years, sponsored by the Morris Park Civic Association, as well as donations from Senator Jeff Klien and Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera.
The donated funds allows volunteers to maintain an abundant garden with the necessary tools and equipment.
The garden includes string beans, zucchinis, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, garlic, and pumpkins, when the season allows.
When asked about the secret behind this miracle growth, Amedio DiGianni explained, “I don’t know how it happened, I’ve been here 10 years and we have never seen anything like this. The last time we grew pumpkins the same thing happened, they were so big.”
Though they took most of the zucchinis down, they left one growing hoping to see it reach its full size.
Most of the food grown is donated into the community. In addition the gardeners also throw an annual barbeque for the neighborhood to enjoy.
The garden is essential for all the seniors who volunteer, working many hours each day to maintain the plants, because it keeps them active.
“It keeps us busy and gives us something to do,” stated Rocky Miano.
