“Do you want to be on top?”
While a resounding yes echoed throughout the country as thousands of wannabe models flocked to the nearest audition hall, a mere 14 were selected to compete for the title of becoming “America’s Next Top Model.”
Bronx resident Nikeysha Clarke made the grade.
The quick-witted 19-year-old aspirant first auditioned for the show that awards a $100,000 modeling contract with CoverGirl cosmetics, among other prizes, in Cycle 9, promptly after her 18th birthday.
Not making the cut the first time around, Clarke grabbed her second chance when a scout noticed her at a fashion show at Clark Atlanta University, where she attended school in Atlanta, GA.
“I love runways and I love fashion, so I thought this would help me out,” Clarke explained about eagerly accepting the invite for an expedited audition.
Determined to secure her spot the second time through, Clarke said she was ready to pull out all the stops.
“So I got in front of the camera and started running my mouth,” she said laughing.
Crazy or not, it worked.
After a series of cuts, Clarke’s eccentric personality solidified her slot in the top 14.
“I was really happy,” she recalled of her elated moment. “I was like, ‘Yes! Thank God I made it.”
Sadly, Clarke’s journey to the top came to a screeching halt at the group’s second elimination, which aired Wednesday, September 10.
Evaluating both her photo and progress through the competition, the judges determined Clarke wasn’t quite up to par.
The Allerton resident blames her self-proclaimed motor mouth for her early dismissal from the show.
“I talk a lot – period,” she explained. “But I guess when you’re with Tyra you should shut up and listen.”
Though she was disappointed with her early discharge, the candidate said she loved having the opportunity to do what she loves most – model.
As for her future plans, Clarke said she’s not giving up.
In efforts to pursue her modeling career, the excited teen took the year off from college to allow time for additional auditions.
She assured, “You know this isn’t the last time you’re seeing me.”
