Fadil B. Brija, Pelham Pkwy. resident, named to Tax Commission

Councilman James Vacca joined his colleagues on Wednesday, September 24, to vote in favor of appointing Pelham Parkway North resident Fadil B. Brija to the New York City Tax Commission. As one of seven commissioners, Brija will hear appeals from residential and commercial property owners who believe the city incorrectly assessed the value of their property, leading to higher tax bills.

“As someone who regularly hears from homeowners who feel socked by ever-rising assessments, I know Mr. Brija has a tough job ahead of him,” Vacca said. “But I also know that Mr. Brija’s incredible résumé and his reputation for sound judgment make him uniquely qualified for this post. I thank the Mayor for nominating such a talented individual, and I wish Mr. Brija the best of luck.”

Brija, who graduated from Lehman College with a degree in economics, joined the Department of Finance (DOF) in 1993 and served through this past June, retiring as Assistant Commissioner of DOF’s Property Division. He previously directed the Property Division of the Bronx office of DOF and later served as Chief Assessor of the Property Division citywide.

Brija will serve the remainder of a six-year term that expires on January 6, 2012.
