Mite Division
In game one of the Mite Division the O’Connor Carpet Bears defeated the North Bronx Paint and Hardware Jets 7 to 2. The Bears offense struggled in the first half, but made up for it in the second half. The first drive in the second half the Bears, led by running back Julian Sanchez who had two great runs one for 20 yards and the other for 15 yards to set up the first score. Credit the great blocking of Michal Morales, Jesus Morales and Connor Hanley-Piri for opening the holes that quarterback Damian Garcia ran through to score the only touchdown and extra point of the game. The Bears defense was at its best, led by the great tackling of Garcia, Sanchez and Hanley-Piri stopping the Jets offense on every play. John Carlo Cala made a great open field tackle to stop a scoring drive by the Jets. Sean Barry, Robert Vacco and Nathaniel Mathis turned in a good performance on defense also. Bears Coaches, Pat and Jim agree that this was one of the better defense games the Bears have played.
In game two the America A-1 Auto Chiefs beat the Villa Barone Manor Eagles 21 to 0. Behind a strong effort by linemen John Walker, Jalen Martinez, Erim Pelinkovic, Liam O’Neill and Teddy “Tank” Czerniewski, quarterback Mark Porco was able to score two running touchdowns and threw to Damil Cordero for the extra point. The intense pressure of the defensive line led by Lorenzo Maida and Anthony Santiago held the Eagles scoreless. Sal Maida and Zack Hoina made some good open field tackles to stop the driving Eagles in the second half. For the Eagles Gino Galella, Joseph Taormina, Joseph Scovotti and Colin Wright played a solid game in a losing effort.
Pee Wee Division
The Peewee Division started the day with a solid game played by the Kleen-Awn Blue Devils and the Anthony’s Collision Redskins. The Blue Devils outscored the Redskins 13 to 7. On the Blue Devils first possession Sharrod Gorum ran the ball 50 yards which helped set up the first touchdown and extra point scored by Eric Berrios. With eight seconds left in the game Izayah Powell ran for 60 yards to score the game winning touchdown. Had it not been for Billy Rueger and Diana Velez making key blocks Powell might not have scored. The Blue Devils defense played very well keeping the Redskins to only one score. On defense for the Blue Devils, Matthew Aquino, Anthony “Reggie” Reggio and Robert Regalado played an awesome game with Aquino making a touchdown saving tackle. The Blue Devils would like to wish Angel Nevarez of the Redskins a speedy recovery.
The second Peewee game of the day saw the Middletown Animal Clinic Spartans beat the Dr. David Stevens Steelers 21 to 0. The Spartans offensive line led by Joseph Aparicio, Victor Falu and Anthony Russo blocked so well that it enabled three different players to score the Spartans three touchdowns. Jordan Dabkowski scored the first touchdown on a 53 yard run, William Espinal scored the second on a 2 yard dive and Sean Vanegas scored the last one. Credit Nicholas Zayas with scoring two extra points and Joseph Silvestri with one. Nicholas Gennarelli had a 30 yard reception to help the Spartans cause. On defense the Spartans had a quarterback sack by Frank Pinto and Kalif Cox, while the rest of the defensive line played a great game.
In the last Peewee game of the day the Food Factory Ramblers got by the Jimmy Ryan’s Crusaders 7 to 0. Quarterback Ross Bucolo of the Ramblers led his team to victory with his passing and running. Bucolo completed two passes and ran for 10 yards to set up the only score of the game by Bryan Lugo on a 5 yard dive into to end zone. Andrew Geni also had a good game running for over 50 yards. On defense, Anthony Martinez and Jimbo Barry had a strong game. For the Crusaders on offense, Geffrey Ogando played a solid game to keep them in the game but the Crusaders could not get into the end zone. Jeremy Lopez had an outstanding game on the defensive side of the ball recording two key sacks. Great teamwork by the entire Crusaders team to keep this game close, as they recorded their first loss of the season.
Junior Division
In game one of the Junior Division the Silvestri Carpet Javelins defeated the Paddy Doherty’s Black Knights 27 to 0. Playing in the backfield for the first time 2 year veteran Jayson Ramos ran a 30 yard sweep for a touchdown behind the blocks of Sekret Kukaj, Jonathan Cardona and Kedar Smith. Adrian Aviles caught a pass from quarterback Anthony Monserrate for a 93 yard catch and run touchdown. The Javelins last score came on a busted play, Justin Orengo scrambled and dove into the end zone behind Nelson Rivera and Justin Cowan. On defense the solid line play by Justin Pena and Angel Arroyo kept the Knights off the score board.
With the weather threatening all morning the Ralph Giordano F. H. Saints and the McNulty F. H. Rams took to the field for the last game of the day. Led by quarterback Ryan DiGirolamo and the hands of center Robert Silvestri the Saints offense had a very productive day scoring 4 touchdowns and 3 extra points. The first Saint score came on a short pass from DiGirolamo to tight end Joshua Nugent, the extra point was pounded in by Jeremy Vega. The Saints defense took the field and kept the Rams from scoring. The second Saints score came on a 50 yard run by Jeremy Vega and the extra point was scored by DiGirolamo. The next Saints offensive drive was a series of first downs culminating in a 2 yard run pounded up the middle by David Rivas-Torres, with the extra point run in on a sweep by Jeremy Vega. The last Saints score came as the clock was winding down with another long run by Jeremy Vega. The offensive line that opened up the lanes for the Saints running backs consisted of guards Sean Sonnemann and Paget Bramble, tackles Thomas Rufino and Joshua Mojica, and tight ends Joshua Nugent, Michael Lynch and Anthony Lardo. The Saints defense had as good a day as the offense, holding a strong Rams team to only 1 touchdown. Safeties Kevin Payano and Michael Lynch deflected several passes that would have yielded long yards for the Rams. The defensive end team of Zamuki Colon and Steven Ramos protected the sidelines for the Saints, while the defensive line of Paget Bramble, Justin Mogg, Matthew Kelly and Sean Sonnemann did a great job of closing up mid field.
Pop Warner Teams
In a possible preview of the Pop Warner Pee Wee championship game, the Kaseman Chiropractic Bronx Warriors moved their record to 2-0 by defeating the Brooklyn Pitbulls 12-0 in a hard fought defensive battle. The Warriors defense was once again the story as they held the potent Pitbull offense, who had scored 52 points in two games, to a single first down and no points. The defense has been dominant through two games and often provides the offense with great field position. Romelo Brown was a force from his defense end position causing a fumble and making a bunch of great tackles. Justin Acosta continues to show everyone that he is unblockable and has become an absolute nightmare to opposing teams. TJ Bowman and Shane Cherry also deserve a mention as they were in position all game long making it a very frustrating day for the visitors from Brooklyn. Offensively, the Warriors rolled up 254 yards through the air and on the ground. The rushing attack was once again lead by Jayson Gonzalez( 67 yards), Caesar Holcomb (31yards on 5 carries), and Domenic Arena(101 yards on 9 carries and 2 TD’S). Arena also chipped in with a 54 yard kick return to start the second half. QB James Werner went 4-6 passing with all of his completions ending up in the hands of first year player Tyrrell Halliman. Halliman finished up the day with four receptions for 54 hard earned yards. The line did a great job of opening holes as the Collins brothers (Justin and Jonathan) as well as DJ Cassidy, Anthony Caserta, Donvito Kuinlan and Jarrett Birch all blocked from the snap of the ball to the whistle. The Warriors will look to go 3-0 on Sunday, September 28th as they square off against their Bronx rivals, the Kips Bay Mustangs.
The Kaseman Chiropractic Bronx Warriors ran their record to a perfect 3-0 on the season with a 39-0 victory over their Bronx rivals, the Kips Bay Mustangs. While their defense has been dominant all season, only allowing a single first down in three games, the offense had been effective but sluggish. That all came to an end, as seven different players found the end zone on this past Sunday. Jayson Gonzalez continues to improve each week and grow more confident in his new role. Jayson rushed for 96 yards on just 5 carries with a TD as he set the tone early with a 10 yard rumble on the Warriors first offensive play. Domenic Arena once again proved elusive in going over the 100 yard mark for the third straight game as he totaled 103 yards on 6 carries finding the end zone twice for his 4th and 5th TD’s of the season. Caesar Holcomb blocked effectively and added a 10 yard score on his only carry of the game. Shane Cherry scored on an 11 yard sweep in addition to hauling in an 18 yard TD pass from quarterback James Werner. Werner controlled the tempo by rushing for a season high 22 yards and completing 5-6 passes for 49 yards and a TD. Other players to score were Tyrell Halliman, Joseph Alba, and Angel Aponte who all hauled in receptions for PAT’s. Backup QB Anthony Caserta joined the party by tossing a 3 yard score to close out the scoring. The Warriors total offense totaled 306 yards which was a season high. They hope to continue their balanced attack as they next oppose the always tough Pride Lions from Brooklyn on the weekend of 10/4.
