Mite Division
The Warriors Mite Division has moved all its games from Lehman High School to Rice Stadium in Pelham Bay Park on Sunday afternoons. Please refer to our web site for exact times.
In the first game at Rice, the Villa Barone Manor Eagles beat the Legends Photography 13 to 6. The Eagles scoring came on a quarterback bootleg by Gino Galella that went for 60 yards to the end zone. The second Eagle score was made by Colin Wright on a 40 yard run. The Eagles defense looked very impressive. They held the Giants to only one score. The whole defense played extremely well. For the Giants Mark Vega scored the only touchdown on a 50 yard run on a reverse handoff from Julian Cardona in the first half. On defense lineman Nicholas Rivera led the Giants with four sacks and two forced fumbles.
The second game was a defensive battle with the American A-1 Auto Chiefs and the North Bronx Paint and Hardware Jets playing to a 6 to 6 tie. Both teams played a good tough defensive game. The Chiefs scored their only touchdown on the solid blocking by linemen Christopher Santiago and John Walker. On defense, Sal Maida was supported by fellow safety Giovanni Cardenales and Lloyd Edmondson with solid tackles all game long.
Pee Wee Division
In a thriller, the Kleen-Awn Blue Devils defeated the Dr. David Stevens Steelers 20 to 6. The Blue Devils were clicking on all cylinders. Eric Berrios scored in the first half on a quarterback sweep. In the second half, the Blue Devils scored their second touchdown on a tight end pop, quarterback Berrios found Billy Rueger in the open and completed the pass with Rueger making a diving catch. Running back Irvin Cespedes finished off the day with a 50 yard power sweep on the right side. The offensive line led by John Tyrell, Robert Roman and Stephan Ramon created the running lanes. The defense was solid again led by Rueger, Berrios who had an interception and Izayah Powell limiting the Settlers to minimal yards in the second half.
The next Peewee game saw The Food Factory Ramblers beat the Anthony’s Collision Redskins. Bryan Lugo of the Ramblers scored three touchdowns and Ethan Perez scored one. Extra points were scored by Ross Bucolo and Andrew Geni. Credit the solid blocking of the offensive line led by Lazarous Santiago and Albert Torres in creating the holes for the running backs. On defense Anthony Muniz, Isiah Hernandez and Tristen Stor played a great game in keeping the Redskins offense at bay. For the Redskins, on offense, Tariq Davis, Michael Booth and Nicholas Cirillo played well and on defense Ryan Cox and Issiah Rosario played a solid game.
In the last game of the day, the Middletown Animal Clinic Spartans outlasted the Jimmy Ryan’s Crusaders 19 to 0. Quarterback William Espinal of the Spartans had a great day completing 7 passes, one for a touchdown to Jordan Dabkowski that went for 20 yards. The other Spartans score came from Sean Vanegas on a 5 yard dive and Espinal on quarterback keeper. Joseph Silvestri was also on the receiving end of an Espinal pass catching two, one for an extra point. Kalif Cox, Victor Falu and Andre Brown played a solid game on the offensive line enabling these drives to succeed. The defensive line led by Juan Carlos Villalobos with a quarterback sack, Nicholas Zayas with an interception and Anthony Russo and Justin Kelly with solid tackling kept the Crusaders off the score board.
Junior Division
The Ralph Giordano F. H. Saints defeated the Silvestri Carpet Javelins 18 to 6 to begin the first game of the second round of the season. The Saints defense held the Javelins to three and out and took over on their own 35 yard line, a few plays later, David Rivas-Torres broke through and took off for a 45 yard run for the touchdown. The Saints defensive line of Sean Sonnemann, Justin Mogg, Matthew Kelly and Thomas Rufino plugged the middle while the ends Steven Ramos and Zamuki Colon and linebackers Jeremy Vega, David Rivas-Torres and Ryan DiGirolamo contained the corners and held the Javelins at bay for the for the rest of the half. The second Saints score came on a series of drives culminating in a touchdown run by Jeremy Vega. The final Saint score was a 50 yard broken play run to the outside by Jeremy Vega behind the blocking of Sean Sonnemann. These offensive drives came behind the blocks Anthony Lardo, Joshua Mojica, Kelly, Robert Silvestri, Sonnemann, Rufino, Joshua Nugent and flanker Jose Detres. The only score of the second half was by the Javelins. The rest of the second half was a combined tug of war as both teams battled back and forth but were unable to score. The Saints safeties Kevin Payano and Michael Lynch prevented the Javelin passing game from being effective, while penalties held back the Saint offense in the second half. For the Javelins on offense, Justin Orengo scored the only touchdown in the fourth quarter. The young Javelin offensive line led by Kadar Smith led the blocking against the older Saints line to help Orengo score. On defense for the Javelins, Tomas Vicente, Carlos Flores and Justin Pena made some great tackles.
The second Junior game saw the McNulty F. H. Rams beat the Paddy Doherty’s Black Knights 21 to 12. In a game in which the Black Knights made remarkable strides fell a little short. The Knights offense was led by Eric Bachelder, Richard Johnson and Dawshaquan Thomas put up some good numbers early in the game. The offensive line led by Lewin Garcia, Juany Colon and Richard Guzman opened up some nice holes for the running backs. On defense, Sean Barry, Shadell Morgan and Declan Byrne made some solid tackles to keep the game close.
Pop Warner Teams
The Kaseman Chiropractic Peewee Warriors took their act on the road for the first time this year and the results were once again positive as they defeated the Pride Lions of Brooklyn 38-0. While the defense is often overlooked with this team, it should be noted that they held their third opponent in four tries to zero first downs and have allowed only one all season. Justin Acosta once again led the ferocious attack with numerous tackles for losses. Giancarlo Furio, CJ Holcombe, and DJ Cassidy also deserve mention as the defense was always in position and never gave their opponent a chance. While stopping an opponent is the primary objective of any defense, the Warriors took it to another level on Sunday when they opened the games scoring with a 35 yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown by defensive end Romelo Brown. Romelo scooped up the free ball and weaved his way through would be tacklers for the spectacular return which seemed to jumpstart the whole team. Offensively, the Warriors took to the air as quarterback James Werner completed 10-14 passes for a season high 171 yards. Two of those completions went to split end Tyrell Halliman who scored on touchdown passes of 18 and 36 yards. Shane Cherry continued his strong running by gaining 48 yards and scoring on a 21 yard run. Domenic Arena scored his 6th touchdown of the season on a 19 yard option which was set up by a beautiful 33 yard hookup between James Werner and split end Joey Alba. The scoring was rounded out by fullback TJ Bowman who rumbled in from the 12 yard line late in the game. Bowman was a bull as he rushed three times for 37 yards. To not mention the great work of the warrior special teams would be a terrible oversight. While the kick return team has been great this year the kickoff team has been outstanding. Kicker Angel Aponte consistently pins opponents deep in their own territory which really gives the defense a chance to do their thing.
