Mite Division
In the first Mite game played on Sunday at Rice Stadium the American A-1 Auto Chiefs continued their winning ways by defeating the O’Connor Carpet Bears 19 to 0. Again this week the Chiefs offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage with outstanding performances by Jack Walker, Teddy “Tank” Czerniewski and Anthony Santiago. A strong ground effort by Lorenzo Maida was supported by Marc Porco and Liam O’Neill at quarterback. The defense played like a team of 11 with everyone supporting each other and making it difficult for the Bears to advance the ball. The defensive standout of the day, Marc Porco, intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. This Chiefs team played like a team today and all players and coaches were proud of their performance.
The second Mite game on Sunday saw the Legends Photography Giants beat the North Bronx Paint and Hardware Jets 13 to 2. The Giants offensive line led by center Matthew Carrera opened up the holes enabling Mark Vega to score on a 60 yard reverse and Julian Cardona on a sweep. On defense, stellar play by lineman Sean O’Neill, corner back Anthony DeAngelo and Mark Cojacaru with a fumble recovery kept the Jets offense at bay.
Pee Wee Division
The Middletown Animal Clinic Spartans and the Kleen-Awn Blue Devils played a great game with the Spartans coming out on top 12 to 7. Jordan Dabkowski scored both Spartans touchdowns, one on a 40 yard run from scrimmage behind the outstanding blocking of Nicholas Gennarelli, David Caraballo, Frank Pinto and Joseph Aparicio and the second on an always exciting kickoff return. The solid defensive play of Kalif Cox with two sacks, Justin Kelly with one sack, Gennarelli with six tackles, Aparicio with six tackles and Joseph Silvestri with two tackles kept the high power Blue Devils offense to only one score.
The Food Factory Ramblers defeated the Dr. David Stevens Steelers 23 to 0. The Ramblers scores came from Andrew Geni on a 40 yard run, Bryan Lugo on a 10 yard dive and Albert Torres on a 10 yard pass from Ross Bucolo. On defense the Ramblers played extremely tough, not allowing the Steelers to score. Leading the defense was Anthony Muniz with an interception, Ethan Perez, Anthony Martinez, Tristen Stor and Tyler Scott making tackles all over the field.
In the final game the Jimmy Ryan’s Crusaders and the Anthony’s Collision Redskins played to a 13 to 13 tie.
Junior Division
In the first Junior game played on Saturday the Ralph Giordano F. H. Saints defeated the Paddy Doherty’s Black Knights 21 to 0. The Saints first score came on a 45 yard run by Jeremy Vega with the extra point scored by David Torres. Vega also scored the Saints second touchdown with the extra point coming from Bryan Leon behind a great block by Torres. The last touchdown for the Saints found the duo of Vega and Leon doing it again. All of these plays could not have happened if it wasn’t for the skills and leadership of quarterback Ryan Digirolamo. The Saints defense was once again at the top of their game not letting the Knights get on the scoreboard. Paget Bramble, Thomas Rufino, Justin Mogg and Elijah Alamo have become the center of the Saints defensive line. The Black Knights had some excellent plays turned in by Steven Olmo, Declan Byrne, Daniel Hernandez and Vincent DiDomenico on offense. The Knights defense was sparked by Rashaad Bazemore, Sean Barry, Darius Hodges, Emmanuel Woods and Angel Torres.
The Silvestri Carpet Javelins beat the McNulty F. H. Rams 20 to 0 in the second Junior game. Coming off a big loss to the Saints last week the Javelins came to this game all fired up. Dylan Monserrate scored a 55 yard touchdown early in the first quarter behind the blocking of Malachi Smith and Justin Pena. After two failed pass attempts, Javelins Coach Mike Monserrate decided to ground it out with Malachi Smith scoring the second touchdown on a 40 yard run behind Jonathan Cardona and Carlos Flores. The final Javelins score came in the fourth quarter on a great run by Freddrick McMillan weaving his way to the end zone. On defense the Javelins showed their fury by holding the Rams scoreless. Malachi Smith led the way with an interception, Justin Orengo and Michael Morrone made some great tackles at the line of scrimmage and Nelson Rivera, Angel Arroyo and Thomas Vicente spent most of the day in the Rams backfield disrupting their offense.
Pop Warner Teams
The Kaseman Chiropractic Peewee Warrior travel team faced their first crisis of the season on Sunday10/12 as they fell behind 6-0 early in their contest with the New City Rams. The Rams play out of the Rockland Division of Pop Warner which is considered the toughest in the state and early on it looked as if they would run right through the previously unbeaten Warrior squad. In addition to taking an early lead their defense held the Warriors to a mere 8 plays in the first half. Fortunately, one of those plays was a 77 yard completion from James Werner to Shane Cherry which put the Warriors up 7-6 after a successful extra point conversion. After weathering another long Ram drive which stalled at the 3 yard line, the Warriors regrouped at the half and played inspired football in the second half. The running game got going with Jayson Gonzalez (57 yards on 6 carries) and Domenic Arena (36 yards on 6 carries) as well as the passing game as James Werner consistently found his targets. Werner finished the game 6-9 for 206 yards and hit on scoring strikes of 77, 46, and 39 yards. Tyrell Halliman had another big day as he hauled in 4 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. Tyrone Bowman then iced the cake with a 5 yard plunge in the 4th quarter to put the game away. Defensively, the Warriors were greatly aided by interception returns of 47 yards by safety Angel Aponte and 52 yards by cornerback Giancarlo Furio. The bulk of the offensive damage was done when the Warriors ran their shotgun offense. As is the case in this offense, nothing can run smoothly without an accurate snap. Anthony Caserta was on the money all day which allowed the offense to run as smoothly as it did. The Warriors will look to wrap up an undefeated regular season when they travel to Brooklyn to face the second place Brooklyn Falcons on Saturday, October 18.
