Samuel Young Legion Post 620

Hello all!

The New York City Veterans Day Parade will take place on November 11, Veteran’s Day. Starts at 11:30 a.m., from 26th Street and goes to 56th Street, where it ends at 3:30 p.m. I believe the Transit Pride Pipers are marching and playing along.

The veteran’s friend, Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr., and the Bronx Veteran’s Advisory Council, are sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C. on November 5. The bus leaves from the Bronx VA Hospital at 6:30 a.m. Boarding will be at 6:15 a.m. Proper ID is required to board. The tour includes: Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, WWII Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial. This is a walking tour so dress comfortably. Lunch is provided by the New Era Veterans and the Bronx Veterans Resource Center. Call Melvyn A. Romero at (718) 537-7113 for seat reservations. Limit one seat per person. You can’t reserve for others.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Post, in its never ending quest for community service, is again making the facility available to Life Line Screening. These folks have been here before on many occasions. They screen for stroke and carotid artery problems, heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation), abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and osteoporosis.

The stroke, vascular disease and heart rhythm package (four tests) costs $149. Add the osteoporosis screening for $10 more. All five tests for $159. Life Line Screening does not participate in the Medicare Program. They do accept credit cards. Pre-registration is required, so call (800) 636-0418 and register.

We are getting closer to our holiday visit to the VA. Lots of books have come in from the neighborhood, as we speak more are on their way. For this I shout out a great thank you.

We’re still collecting non-perishable foods for the Love Kitchen at St. Peter’s Church in the Square.

Our yard sale is October 25, from noon to 3 p.m.

Once again, remember the amendment on this year’s ballot allowing disabled vets to get preference on Civil Service Tests, even if their not collecting disability benefits.

Trivia Time!!

October 22, 1962, saw the start of the Cuban missile crisis. President JFK announced a quarantine of all offensive military equipment shipped to Cuba, Following the discovery of Soviet-built missiles bases on the island.

On the same date in 1797, French balloonist, Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first parachute descent, landing safely from a height of about 3,000 feet over Paris.

On October 23, 1983, 241 Marines died in a Beirut explosion. Nothing trivial about that.

Rosa Parks died on October 23, 2005.

Keep the troops in your prayers, take a vet to lunch, and God bless.
