Med society taps Jacobi as Hopital of the Year

The Bronx County Medical Society named Jacobi Medical Center its ‘Hospital of the Year’ Saturday, November 8. Executive Director Diane P. Miller thanked the medical center for partnering with her organization and praised Jacobi’s emergency care.

“I was born and raised in the Bronx,” Miller said. “Whenever anyone in my family got into trouble, we ended up in Jacobi’s emergency room. I have a lot of respect for Jacobi and always will.”

Jacobi is the fifth hospital so honored. The Bronx County Medical Society’s board of borough physicians has conferred the ‘Hospital of the Year’ award annually since 2004. The society is based in Riverdale.

“When we sat down, Jacobi was at the top of our list,” Miller said. “It’s one of the best equipped hospitals in the Bronx and one of the most active.”

Jacobi, a 457-bed teaching facility affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is part of the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation and the North Bronx Healthcare Network.

“We are honored to be named 2008 Hospital of the Year by the Bronx County Medical Society,” Jacobi Executive Director William Walsh said in a written statement.

The hospital boasts a new Ambulatory Care Pavilion, which Miller and her board toured recently.

“Jacobi’s new wing has only been open for two years,” Miller said. “It’s amazing.”

Jacobi is also known for its trauma center, multi-person hyperbaric unit, burn center, surgical intensive care unit, stroke center and regional pregnancy center.

“Our beautiful new facilities are the perfect complement to the quality medical services our patients need and deserve,” Walsh said.

Jacobi accepted the award at the Bronx County Medical Society’s 94th Annual Dinner Dance. The dance was a success, according to Miller, held at the Greentree Country Club in New Rochelle.

“A younger crowd got up and danced,” she said. “The food was amazing. I’ve run five dinners, and this was by far the best.”
