As a holiday treat it was announced that the Ferry Point Golf Course seems to be progressing into a world-class 18-hole green as promised.
“We are finally at the point where we are going to see some action,” said Councilman James Vacca. “This golf course is becoming a reality.”
The 222-acre former landfill was once overseen by Ferry Point Park Partners, who pulled out of their contract for financial reasons, in November of 2006 after a seven-year investment.
This past June, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a contract with Sanford Golf Design for the design and construction management of what will soon be the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Ferry Point Park.
According to Parks, they are currently in the process of selecting a contractor under Sanford Golf Design’s management to build the approved design chosen.
“I have been fighting for this since it was a dream of our community in 1977,” said Vacca. “It’s a perfect use for Ferry Point Park.”
Despite these assurances, the community is still monitoring the project’s progress very closely.
“I have called a community meeting in conjunction with Community Board 10 to review the Parks Department updates,” said Vacca. “To go over designs and review the golf course time table I think means we have good news ahead and I know the city is committed to finishing this course.”
The meeting will be held on Thursday, December 18, at 7 p.m. in St. Frances de Chantal School, at 2962 Harding Avenue, and is open to the community.
In another positive step, according to a release from TRC Companies, Inc., which has been involved since the course’s early stages, the organization has inked a contract worth $11.9 million for comprehensive engineering and project management services at the site.
The company is in charge of locating, testing, importing and placing over 500,000 cubic yards of sustainable fill and cover material, as well as additional work in compliance with the requirements of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Part 360 Solid Waste Management Permits.
Dorothea Poggi, president of Friend of Ferry Point Park, feels differently than most about the recent progress for the location.
