After Hurricane Ike swept through Texas in September, Cardinal Spellman High School initiated an effort to help children affected by the storm. Judith Furnari, moderator of the Service Society, contacted St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Baytown, Texas. Many of the students at St. Joseph’s lost supplies and other personal belongings, and the Service Society decided they could best help by collecting school goods and other items and send them to the Texas school. Service Society members went to each Spellman homeroom and collected various donated articles. In all, over 60 book bags filled with school supplies for the children of St. Joseph’s were sent to Baytown.
“The response at Spellman has been tremendous. Some homerooms have filled up two bags worth of supplies. Faculty and staff are dropping off all sorts of items every day for these children in need. I am completely overcome with happiness from seeing how big our hearts can be,” said Furnari. The coordinating officers of the Service Club who managed the school-wide effort were Barbara Ofosu-Somuah, Ambar Lara, Jolle Thomas, and Jobeth Arceo.
