St. Raymond’s forced 26 turnovers and rallied from a four-point, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat North Mecklenburg (N.C.), 58-51, Saturday afternoon in the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational at Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C.
The Ravens (6-0) advance to the semifinals Monday and are scheduled to face Word of God (N.C.) at 9 p.m.
“It was a great experience,” St. Raymond’s coach Oliver Antigua said by phone. “I wasn’t sure who was going to step up and in the end everyone did. We played well and hard defensively. The guys made big plays down the stretch which is good.”
North Mecklenburg (8-1), featuring William & Mary-bound Kyle Gaillard, undeclared senior Andre Marhold and super sophomore Bernard Sullivan, is one of the biggest teams in North Carolina and shot 54 percent from the field.
But the Vikings couldn’t handle St. Ray’s relentless press and it resulted in a bevy of easy buckets.
Leading the way for the Ravens was Jose Rodriguez, who scored 12 points. Tyreak Johnson had 11 and Sidiki Johnson and Harold McBride scored eight apiece.
Archbishop Molloy 69, Brooklyn Collegiate 67: Russ Smith led the way with 29 points, including clutch free throws down the stretch, to lead Archbishop Molloy past Brooklyn Collegiate at the Holiday Hoops tournament at the Aviator Complex.
Smith, who needs just nine points to reach 1,000 for his high-school career, helped stake Molloy (5-2) to a 17-point halftime lead. But Michael Murray (20 points) led Brooklyn Collegiate back in the second half as the Lions tied the score heading into the final eight minutes.
Ryan Dillon had 12 points and Jin Hong added 11 for the Stanners, who take on St. Mary’s (L.I.) in a semifinal Sunday at 9 p.m. St. Francis Prep and Christian Brothers Academy (N.J.) meet in the other semifinal.
St. Edmund 37, Samuel Tilden 35: Jamie Thelwell finished with nine points, including a pair of free throws with 8.3 seconds left to seal the victory for St. Edmund in the Holiday Hoops tournament consolation round at the Aviator Complex. Marc Palacios had 10 points and Vinny Marchi and added eight for St. Edmund (3-5).
Boys & Girls 71, JL Mann 56: Mike Taylor had 21 points, six assists and six rebounds, Lamount Samuell Jr. had 13 and Leroy Isler 10 as the Kangaroos advanced to the Beach Ball Classic semifinals in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Boys (8-2) will meet Wheeler (Ga.) Monday.
Gainesville (Fla.) 70, Thomas Jefferson 52: Joel Wright scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Orange Wave (7-2) in the second round of the McDonald’s Tampa Hoops Classic.
Notre Dame (Utica, N.Y.) 82, Telecommunications 78: Remi Mignott had 19 points and Gregory Briggs added 18 for Telecommunications in the opening round of the Nazareth Holiday Tournament. Notre Dame will meet Transit Tech in the Sunday’s semifinal while Telecommunications (5-2) faces Moore Catholic in the consolation bracket.
Transit Tech 56, Moore Catholic 45: Barry Posey led the Express (4-2) with 17 points and Rhamel Brown had 10 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks. David Acres paced Moore Catholic (2-5) with 19 points.
Cathedral Prep 60, Automotive 50: With the game deadlocked at 46 with four minutes to go, Cathedral Prep went on a 14-4 run to close it out and upset the Pistons in the opening round of the Nazareth Tournament. Billy Schaefer scored 17 points and Ozzie Oddle added 14. Sheldon Brown led Automotive (5-2) with 22 points. Cathedral Prep (7-3) will face FDR in the semifinals Sunday at Nazareth HS. Automotive meets Nazareth.
FDR 75, Nazareth 72: John Samot hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to send the host school to the loser’s bracket. FDR (7-1), which trailed by 15 points at one point, was led by John Leduc, who had 18 points and 13 assists. Marquis Lee scored 20 for Nazareth (2-7).
Long Island City 69, Manhattan Center 65: Konstantin Kapelonis scored 18 points, Kaseem Harris had 16 and Aziz Raji 12 for Long Island city (7-4) in the Pro-Am tournament.
Girls’ Basketball
Christ the King 82, Bethlehem 60: Ariel Edwards had 27 points and 11 rebounds, Tahira Johnson added 16 points and 15 rebounds and Geleisa George had 14 points and eight assists as the Lady Royals improved to 6-3 in a non-league game played at Clifton Park, just north of Albany, N.Y. CK will meet Shenendehowa HS Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Notre Dame Academy 41, St. Joseph by the Sea 38: Teresa Conigliaro had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Rachel Rusi had 12 points to lead Notre Dame (5-3, 1-0 CHSAA). Alyssa Castania had 15 points for St. Joseph by the Sea (2-2, 1-2).
McKee/Staten Island Tech 56, St. John Villa 45: Brittany Baudanza and Kristen Markoe had 16 points each and Kaitlyn Astel had 14 points for McKee/Staten Island Tech (7-3). Shpresa Liharevic had 10 points for St. John Villa (2-5).
Portland (Maine) 77, Susan Wagner 61: Chelsea Traverso had 20 points and Amanda Delacrezia had 17 points for Wagner (1-7).
St. Mary’s (N.J.) 34, Port Richmond 33: Shaniqua Lewis and Tina Mazzarisi each had 10 points for Port Richmond (5-5).
