The Bronx River Art Center, located at 1087 East Tremont Avenue, announces its 2009 Spring session of free art classes for youth, teens and young adults ages 9 to 21. Youth Classes are held Mon. to Fri., 4 to 6 pm and Sat., 1:30 to 4:30 pm.
BRAC is a community-based multi-arts center whose mission is to provide art programming and promote environmental awareness for residents of the Bronx. Bronx youth, adults and school groups can explore their creative talents in a thriving cultural and artistic environment led by our staff of professional teaching artists.
Registration for BRAC’s spring session will be held on the 1st floor gallery through Apr. 4, Mon. to Fri., 3 to 6:30 pm and Sat., 11 am to 4 pm 3. All art classes are free to youth 9 to 21, who want to expand their creative horizons. However, contributions are asked for to help ensure that BRAC programs are available to every child in our borough regardless of financial need.
BRAC also offers fee-based classes for adults in a 8 week Spring has Sprung series that includes combination classes in Digital Photography/Printmaking and Painting/Ceramics for $100. They also offer fee-based workshops for schools and community groups.

Armand Khatri of the Bronx, enrolled at Binghamton University, State University of New York, was recently named a recipient of the 2008-2009 Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges award. The selection process for this national award is very competitive. Nominees must have exhibited outstanding leadership in co-curricular activities or service to the university community and have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average.

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) will present Elliot L. Hendler, CPA of the Bronx with its Distinguished Service Award on Thurs., May 14 at the society’s 112th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel. This award recognizes outstanding leadership services to the profession through publications, public service and other activities.
Hendler received this award for the leadership he has shown to the NYSSCPA as a member of its Board of Directors and Executive Committee and to its Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE) as Secretary and a Trustee, and an advocate of CPA continuing professional education (CPE) to continuously elevate professional standards for the CPA profession. He currently serves as a NYSSCPA Vice President and a member of its SEC Practice, Accounting and Auditing, Industry, Tax Division, Practice Management, Public Sector and Consulting Services Oversight committees. He is also a member of the editorial review board of The CPA Journal, a peer-reviewed technical publication aimed at public and private accounting practitioners, managers, educators, and other financial professionals.
Hendler has been a member of the NYSSCPA since 1962. He was NYSSCPA Secretary. His NYSSCPA committee service includes serving as chair of the Accounting & Review Services and Membership committees and Annual Study Conferences, and as a member of the Audit, Finance, Nominating, Peer Review, Auditing Standards, Financial Accounting Standards, Committee Operations, Relations with the IRS, Real Estate Accounting, Construction Contractors, Interim Financial Statements and Annual Conference committees. He was also a member of the Task Force on Assessment of Members’ Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Needs and the Committee Coordinator Advisory Group, and a member of the Executive Board of the NYSSCPA’s Manhattan-Bronx Chapter.
Hendler is a partner emeritus with Friedman LLP where he is a director of quality control and a member of the firm’s continuing professional education planning group.
Hendler is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Accountants Club of America and is chairman of the Reviewers Group of New York.

Lehman College Professor Christy Folsom has developed a new method of teaching that balances the need to teach skills and content with a focus on students’ intellectual and social development. Her goal is to enlarge their ability to actually think and to use ethical reasoning to reach conclusions.
Her newly published book, Teaching for Intellectual and Emotional Learning (TIEL): A Model for Creating Powerful Curriculum, provides a guide for developing curriculum that exceeds today’s standards in these areas. It relates the experiences of real teachers who changed their teaching methods to help their students learn more effectively and improve their skills of self-direction and collaboration.
A member of the Lehman faculty since 2001, Prof. Folsom has a broad background in education that spans all ages, grade levels and education fields. She began her career teaching the hearing-impaired. After directing her own preschool, she established and taught in gifted programs in Oregon school districts and has also worked as a consultant in education both nationally and internationally. Prof. Folsom received a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, a master’s from Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University), and a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University.
