The patients of Jacobi Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Unit were recently faced with a major dilemma when their 18-year old laundry machine broke, leaving them unable to wash their clothing.
Patients in the Behavioral Health Unit wash their own clothes as part of their daily activities to help them prepare for their return to the community. “Our patients are in the final stages of transitioning back into group homes or private dwellings in the community,” said Vincent Mulvihill, senior associate director of Behavioral Health Services. “Since they are here for an extended period of time, and often leave campus for interviews at local Day Programs and Placement Centers, they are encouraged to dress in their regular clothes and participate in daily individual and group activities.”
Upon hearing about the broken machine, Jacobi Medical Center Auxiliary board member and Throggs Neck resident Peggy Vega contacted Peter Camardella of Tiso’s Appliances in Pelham. “Mr. Camardella has always been a friend of the Jacobi Medical Center Auxiliary,” said Vega. “Once he heard about the dilemma we were in, he promptly offered us the perfect washing machine at an excellent, discounted price. His contribution truly enhances our patient care.”
When asked why he decided to help, Camardella recounted how just two years ago he was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center following a horrific accident. “The doctors in the Jacobi Emergency Room saved my life. If it weren’t for the Trauma Team, I wouldn’t be here today,” said Camardella. “Helping Jacobi out with this washing machine was the least I could do to give back!”
