This is the last article for 2008 on behalf of the Van Nest Community Association. We wish you a Happy New Year.
The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions is a very old one. It gives every one of us the chance to start new just like the winter solstice (12/22) represented the start of a new cycle of the four seasons to our ancestors. That nature and the new crops they planted would again start anew and give them the chance to prosper and have a good live.
New Year’s resolutions give us a chance to review the past year and see our mistakes and shortcomings then make resolutions to change them for the better. Many of us make the same resolution year after year and fail to keep them. That does not make you a failure but it should teach you maybe you are setting goals that are too high to achieve all at once.
So you want to lose 20 lbs this year? Try to lose only 5 to 10 lbs or less, then in the next year or two lose the rest of the weight. It may take longer but you achieved what you wanted in small steps instead of one big leap but the important thing is that you succeeded. This is just an example of what you can achieve little by little every small advancement is a victory for you. S
o this year as you review your live and this past year remember every little change you make to improve yourself or your situation can only make your live and the lives of everyone you touch better.
May I make a suggestion for one of this year’s resolutions? We all complain about crime and unsafe conditions in our community. You can continue to complain to your friends and neighbors hoping for a miracle or you can do something about it the choice is yours.
Come down to the association and join the patrol. It is not a full time job you volunteer a little of you free time to patrol our neighborhood and report crime and unsafe conditions to the proper city agencies. Every report will be followed up to make sure that it is corrected. This is one of those little steps I mentioned but that can make a giant leap in making Van Nest a safe and well maintained community.
