Volunteer for Jacobi’s Traveling Book Cart

Are you a book lover? Have some spare time during the week and want to help others? Do you enjoy talking about literature? If so, you might be the perfect candidate for one of two Traveling Book Cart volunteer positions at Jacobi Medical Center.

“Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Luisa Hernandez, director of Jacobi’s Volunteer program. “It’s amazing how many lives can be enriched by the kindness and generosity of just one special volunteer.”

The book carts were purchased by the Jacobi Medical Center Auxiliary, a 501(c)3 non profit organization dedicated to supporting enhancements to patient care. “I’ve always found reading to be such a pleasurable and relaxing activity,” said JMC Auxiliary president Ed Speck. “I was very enthusiastic about the new additions – reading can offer patients the opportunity to explore their imaginations and travel to far and distant lands without leaving the safety and security of their hospital rooms.”

Interested volunteers should be self-starters who are reliable and can offer friendly conversation and good cheer to patients. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and commit to volunteer a minimum of three days per week from 9 to 11 a.m. No experience is necessary and volunteers will receive orientation and training for the Traveling Book Cart Volunteer position. Volunteer candidates are subject to clearance requirements of the NYC Health & Hospitals Corporation.
