Throgs Neck Thunder improves to 5-1 after doubleheader sweep

The Throgs Neck Thunder continued their spring season in the Westchester Baseball Association with a doubleheader sweep of CYO/MYBA (Manhattan Youth Baseball Association) on Saturday, May 9. TNT’s record now improves to 5-1.

The first game at Randall’s Island was a straightforward game for the 12 & under TNT team as they won the game 8 to 3. TNT played fundamental baseball as their pitching, hitting and defense all contributed to a winning formula. Batting highlights included Joe Signore (2-3, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI ) and Kevin Anderson (3-3, 3B, RBI). While Michael Tarpey (2

Inn, 1R) and Justin DelVecchio’s (4 Inn, 2R, 8K) combined pitched effort helped secure the win.

In game 2, TNT maintained a 4-2 lead after 5 innings behind the strong pitching effort of Anthony D’Ancona (5.1 Inn, 3R, 5K). However, CYO/MYBA never gave up and rallied for 3 runs to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the 6th inning. But TNT still had last licks and they have shown that to be their prime time. Confident in their abilities, TNT players got down to business in the bottom of the last inning. Justin DelVecchio started the comeback with a hit through the shortstop.

Michael Tarpey drove him home with a triple to tie the score. Then clean-up hitter Joe Signore came up with the chance to win the game and send everyone home. Joe did not disappoint his teammates as he hit a huge double. Therefore for the 3rd week in a row, TNT pulled off another walk-off victory. Notable contributions included Brian O’Rourke (2-3, 2B, R) and a great defensive grab of a line drive by Justin Pena at 2nd base saving a few runs.

Manager Luigi D’Ancona said, “One thing that I’m seeing in our team is that the players have a lot of heart. In the 2nd game, after we lost the lead in the top of 6th inning, I gathered the players for a quick pep talk. I explained that in the past 2 weeks we pulled out a win in our last licks and there was no reason why we couldn’t do it again. However, the players did not need me to tell them that, I could see it in their attitudes and body language. They were confident and optimistic!”
