More than 500 trauma care professionals gathered at the Jacobi Medical Center Rotunda on May 13 for the 11th Annual Warren Wetzel, M.D. Trauma/Emergency Medicine Symposium. The daylong event is the only New York City area conference dedicated solely to reviewing the latest in trauma care.
Dr. Sheldon H. Teperman, director of Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, along with Dr. Paul Gennis, director of Emergency Medicine led a panel of nationally recognized experts in an examination of advances in the field. Trauma Program manager Janet Cucuzzo, MS, RN, CEN, moderated an afternoon session dedicated exclusively to trauma nursing.
“As one of the city’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Centers, we have an obligation to share our expertise with the medical community,” said Dr. Sheldon H. Teperman. “This symposium is an opportunity for physicians, nurses, first responders and other healthcare professionals from across the tri-state area to learn best practices from the nation’s leading trauma care experts.”
Topics presented at this year’s symposium included Traumatic Brain Injury in Professional Athletes, Penetrating Neck Trauma, Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, Controversies in the Management of Abdominal Trauma, Blunt Trauma Plus Shock, Care Strategies for the Obese Trauma Patient, Trauma Systems and Their Effects on Trauma Protocols, and Gang Violence: A Primer for Healthcare Professionals.
