TNBA set to hold its 7th annual triathlon

By Patrick Rocchio

The Throggs Neck Benevolent Association is hosting its seventh annual triathlon in memory of one of its founding board members, Tom Garvey. Garvey was instrumental in laying the foundation for the organization.

Garvey was one of the owners of the former Throggs Neck Stadium, a catering hall located on Schurz Avenue. The hall was a popular destination for many kinds of social functions in the neighborhood for many years.

“Tom Garvey was always a really big presence in Throggs Neck,” said TNBA board member Chris Dalton. “Tom Garvey’s family participates every year – his wife and two daughters and their grandchildren and his son-in-laws.”

Dalton said that the triathlon benefits families who have suffered from catastrophic illness or accidents, and who don’t have sufficient medical coverage, or no medical coverage at all.

The triathlon will take place on Saturday, June 27 beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Like any traditional triathlon, the event will include several different sports testing endurances: swimming, biking, and running.

Participants are to check in at the Manhem Club at 626 Clarence Avenue or the DA Beach Club at 665 Shore Road.

The contestants will swim 1/6th of a mile at either the Manhem or DA Beach club pools. There will then be a 10k bike run from Clarence Avenue to Pelham Bay Park and then back to the campus of SUNY-Maritime College, where there a 5k run will conclude the race. After the competition, there will be a post-race party at Maritime college for the contestants and all residents who wish to attend. Awards will also be given out.

The fees for the racers are $40 for a single person, $60 for a group of two racers, and $80 for a team of three racers. Those fees include the race, a t-shirt, and the post-race party.

All who wish to participate have to pre-register, as they will be called the week of the competition with their pool assignments and be given a map of the race-route on the day of the event.

If you do not participate in the triathlon, but wish to attend the party after the race at Maritime, the cost is $20.

The TNBA sponsors numerous events around Throggs Neck year in and year out, including the annual Throggs Neck St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot.
