TN Thunder heads to the WBA playoffs

The Throgs Neck Thunder (TNT) completed their spring season in the Westchester Baseball Association (WBA) with a sweep of a doubleheader against Richards on Sunday, June 7.

Both games at Yonkers (Andrus Field) were classic baseball games as they were dominated by pitching and defense. In the first game, Frankie Tartaglia went the distance (6 innings) as TNT won 5 to 3. Frankie limited Richards to only 6 hits and 2 earned runs while compiling 7 strikeouts. The defensive highlight was a diving catch of a pop-up behind third base by shortstop Justin DelVecchio.

In game two, Dennis Alevis continued the pitching dominance by throwing a complete game shutout as TNT won 6 to 0. Dennis only gave up 2 hits and recorded 6 K’s. TNT’s defense was exceptional in this game as they threw out a couple of runners trying to take the extra base. Notable contributions included Justin DelVecchio (2-3, 2B, 3B, 2R) and Michael Wickes (2-2, R, RBI)

Manager Luigi D’Ancona said, “It was nice to see that two of the youngest members of our team came through in a big way in these games (11 year olds Frankie and Dennis). As a coach it is always special to see the players respond successfully when you show confidence in them. I was also proud of the rest of team as I wanted to finish the regular season on a strong note.

“Our record concluded at 8 wins, 3 losses and one tie as we now head into the playoffs. But no matter what happens from here on, I know that the players, parents and coaches have had a lot of fun this season!”
