As residents continue to complain of graffiti affecting their quality of life, the 49th Precinct is stepping up enforcement, producing two arrests.
“This is a problem and we have officers out there targeting locations and we are putting a lot of resources into graffiti arrests,” said Captain John Greeley of the 49th Precinct. “Quality of life issues are very important to us within the precinct.”
On Friday, May 29, a 12-year-old male Hispanic was caught defacing the Apple Bank, at 2180 Bolton Street. The youth was found in possession of a spray paint can at the time of the arrest.
On the same day, a 15-year-old vandal was caught using a marker to graffiti a private residence at 2733 Baker Avenue.
“We just have to crack down on graffiti,” said Joe Thompson, member of Community Board 11 and president of the 49th Precinct Community Council.
“We’ve gotten more graffiti on the north side of Pelham Parkway than ever before, so if is important we send a message that graffiti violations are going to be enforced and the Police Department and the 49th Precinct is making an effort to do just that.”
