La Cookie & Bagel opens in Morris Park

La Cookie & Bagel Luncheonette has reopened under new ownership and expanded its operation to serve the families and residents of Morris Park.

Keeping the luncheonette the family operation it was known for, Maria Martino and her brother, Alfonzo Martino, took ownership of 1809 Hone Avenue in April, renovating the location to accommodate fresh ideas.

“We took legal ownership April 1 and started a lunch menu right after Memorial Day weekend,” said Maria Martino.

The luncheonette was formally known for its breakfast selection, but has expanded those offerings to incorporate Italian and Albanian lunch options.

“The hot dishes that really make a killing are the sausage and pepper hero, the Philly cheese steaks, and we have fresh homemade focaccia and panzerotti,” said Maria Martino. “We do weekly specials and we also have some Albanian food because we know there are a lot of Albanians in the community and Albanian owned businesses so we put out dishes for them.”

The neighborhood shop, which has an inviting yellow interior design with seating available to accommodate up to 14 customers, will also be offering fresh cannolis and cheesecake from Gino’s Pastry Shop on Arthur Avenue.

Councilman Jimmy Vacca joined the families and local residents on Monday, June 29 to celebrate the ribbon cutting and sample the cooking.

“This is something new in the community that residents need,” said Tony Signorile, local resident and member of the Morris Park Community Association. “It’s a French name with Italian flavor.”

As a family business, the luncheonette also offers kid selections, including chicken fingers, french fries, hotdogs and hamburgers.

Business hours are Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., with catering options available for any occasion.
