Dixieland on July 4th

The Bronx Arts Ensemble Jazz and Dixieland Band opens the BAE SUMMERMUSIC series with a salute to George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, W. C. Handy and more at a FREE concert in Van Cortlandt Park at Rockwood Drive Circle, near Mosholu Avenue and Broadway on Sat., July 4 at 2 pm in celebration of Independence Day. Trombonist and bandleader Jack Gale, who has arranged music for numerous Broadway theatres, commercials and concerts, will arrange all music for the Jul 4 performance. Seating is provided but the audience is urged to bring folding chairs.

In the event of rain, the concert will be moved to Vladeck Hall in the Amalgamated Houses at the corner of Hillman Avenue and Van Cortlandt Park South. Please contact the BAE office after 11 am on the day of the performance.

SUMMERMUSIC 2009 continues on Sun., July 12, Romantic Summer Breezes, the Music of Dvorak and Brahms; Sun., July 19, Händel’s Sweet Aperitifs, Concerto Grosso, Arias from Apollo and Daphne, Organ Concerto and Cantatas; Sun., July 26, A Calliope Of Sounds From The Winds In The Woods, a Collection of Marches, Waltzes, Water Music and Polkas; Sun., Aug. 2, Irish And Italian Tenors, an Afternoon of Irish and Italian Favorites; and Sun., Aug. 9, Tango Y Bolero.

Bronx Seaside trolley and live music featuring Jared Woods, on Fri., July 3, 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Celebrate the Fourth of July weekend with a free ride on the Bronx Seaside Trolley to Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum and listen to Jared Woods, acoustic guitarist and songwriter. Enjoy the music, a tour the mansion, light refreshments, and a walk through the gardens, before hopping back on the trolley to enjoy a meal at one of City Island’s many restaurants. Join Courtney Wren, Planetarium Instructor at the Hudson River Museum’s Andrus Planetarium, for an evening of star watching on the lawn and learn about summer constellations and meteors.
