All-City Boys’ Outdoor Track honors

There weren’t many surprises during the outdoor track & field season. The champions didn’t change , nor did many of the faces. Fordham Prep and East New York Transit Tech, which both won indoors, again claimed their respective titles.

The Express had one of the most balanced teams in the city. Kameron George and Dextor Boller can beat you on the track and Errol Jeffery and Michael Telesford in the field events. The Rams, led by Wayne Seaton, Zach Keefer and Andrew Hemming, were deep with talent.

Sheepshead Bay’s John Thomas had the best finish to the season, taking home state titles in the 400 and 4 x 100 relay. Teammate Darryl Bradshaw, a hurdler, was again sensational before heading to college at Bethune-Cookman. Farrell’s Cory Duggan and Midwood’s Donald Williams, both juniors, continued to shine and show why next season could be an exceptional one for both.

John Thomas, Sheepshead Bay: The junior was one of the premier middle distance runners in the city this season. Thomas is a tremendous combination of speed, stamina and determination. He is explosive out of the starting blocks, many times ending races before they begin. Thomas won the PSAL and the state outdoor title in the 400 meters. He took home the state crown in a time of 48.24 and hopes to soon break the school record of 47.2. He also won the 200 in 22.03 and holds a top-five time in the state in both the 200 and 400. One of his most impressive accomplishments was helping lead the Sheepshead Bay 4 x 100 relay to a state crown even without two of its best runners, Darryl Bradshaw and Ayo Isijola, who were injured. They won in a time of 42.05.

Sydney McIntosh, Transit Tech: The Express could have folded from within after their two best runners, junior Julian Wood and senior Malik Sykes, quit the team because they wanted to run exclusively with their Metropolis club team. McIntosh helped hold the squad together and finally get them refocused on the task of winning another PSAL title. He has adapted well to the talent he has. Transit Tech use to be know as a squad of sprinters. Recently, McIntosh has helped develop a deep and talented team for field events, which helped the Express, who also won indoors, easily beat Sheepshead Bay for the PSAL outdoor title.

All-City First Team

Sean Atkinson, Nazareth: Atkinson is one of the best middle distance runners in the CHSAA and in the upper echelon in the city. He ran the state’s fifth fastest time and a personal best, 48.39 in the 400 meters, which was good enough for second in the CHSAA intersectional championships. He placed third in the event at the state championship and also was second in the 800 in 1:55.60 at the Rebook Grand Prix.

Darryl Bradshaw, Sheepshead Bay: The outdoor season was again stellar for Bradshaw, who has committed to run at Bethune-Cookman next year. The Sheepshead Bay star has one of the smoothest hurdle motions you can find, helping him to run the state’s second fastest time, 13.90, in the 110-meter hurdles at the Brooklyn borough championships. He won the city title in a time of 14.21. The three-time All-American is a member of the school’s stellar 4 x 100 relay team, but had to miss the state championship because of injury.

Jermaine Brown, Medgar Evers: Brown may be the most versatile and explosive sprinters in the city. He owns the state’s fastest time in the 200 meters with an astounding mark of 21.29 and was a member of Medgar Evers’ 4 x 100 relay team, which ran the fastest time in the state this season at 41.46. Unfortunately for Brown, Medgar Evers did not put its entries in correctly for the PSAL city championship, costing him a chance at a city and state title.

Cory Duggan, Monsignor Farrell: Duggan comes from a long line of pole vaulters. His older brothers, Kyle and Brian, also excelled in the event for Farrell. Corey keeps on leaving his own mark in the event. He blew away the competition at the CHSAA intersectional championships with a leap of 15-3, the second best in the state this season. Duggan, a junior, placed first in the event at the Eastern State championships and third at the state championships.

Leighton Francis, Thomas Jefferson: The senior is one of the most versatile athletes in the city. He won both the triple jump at 46 feet, 7.6 inches and is the PSAL’s first-ever javelin winner at the city championships with a personal best toss of 169-04. He is also an excellent long jumper, hurdler and even won the pentathlon at the Brooklyn borough championship.

Kameron George, Transit Tech: George is the Express’s heart and soul and one of the city’s best and smartest distance runners. The senior always has a plan going into every race and it is usually flawlessly executed. The senior won the 3200 in a time of 9:38.69 and the 1600 in 4:28.88 to help Transit Tech win the PSAL outdoor championship. He also won the 1600 at the Mayor’s Cup.

Wayne Seaton, Fordham Prep: The senior has been the state’s best hurdlers all year long and nothing changed in the spring. He won the 400- and 110-meter hurdles in times of 54.59 and 14.53, respectively, helping Fordham Prep sweep the CHSAA intersectional indoor and outdoor titles this season. His time of 53.96 at the Penn Relays in the 400 hurdles was the third fastest in the state this season. He placed fourth at the state championships.

Donald Williams, Midwood: Williams continued to establish himself as one of the best sprinters in the city. He placed second in the 100 meters at the Mayor’s Cup, fourth at the Reebok Grand Prix and third at the state championships in 10.83. The junior placed secoond at the PSAL city championships, ran the state’s third fastest time in the event (10.70) at the Harold Richter Invitational in May.
