Skate Park holds its annual summer kick-off event

On June 7th, 2009, TNCAP hosted its 4th Annual Skate Park Summer Kick-Off Event. Congressman Crowley, TNCAP, and Citibank sponsored the event.

Element Skate Boards hosted competitions while the Bronx Underground provided live entertainment. It was a great event with over 100 local youth and adults in attendance!

The idea for the Throggs Neck Skate Park started in 1999 after a Throggs Neck Community Action Partnership (TNCAP) survey showed the need for more youth related recreation. In 2001 the research and planning began.

It took four years to gain community and local legislature support, financing, a site to build a park, and to collaborate with the Parks Department and an architect to create the first non-supervised skate park in New York City. Finally, in 2005, construction began on the site of Bruckner Playground behind MS 101. The rest is history!

Since 2005 TNCAP has been working hard to join forces with the community, Parks Department, Police Department, and youth to help monitor the skate park.

However, in the Spring of 2008, concerns about the skate park were brought to the 45th precinct Community Council. In light of these concerns TNCAP received a crime prevention grant from Congressman Crowley to create a skate park advisory committee comprised of local youth and parents to enhance the monitoring efforts of the skate park.

In June 2009, the committee hosted a community meeting with 45th Precinct representatives, Community Board 10 and the 45th Precinct Community Council to listen to residents concerns about the park.
