49th Precinct joins the effort to support troops

The 49th Precinct is joining in the efforts to help our troops and asking the community to do their part for our service men and women.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced recently a citywide collaboration between the Mayors Office, the Office of Veteran Affairs and the American Recreational Military Services.

The ‘support our troops’ initiative will collect items and send care packages to New York City soldiers.

The 49th Precinct will be collecting the requested items for the duration of the program, which runs from Monday, July 13 through Friday, August 21.

Requested items include candy, gum, aspirin, ibuprofen, non-perishable foods, powder drink mixes, instant coffee or tea, microwave soups, pasta, popcorn, nuts and drier fruits, protein bars, cookies, crackers, cough drops, toilet paper, individual tissue packets, toothpaste, floss, saline eye drops, lip balm, feminine products, baby wipes, cotton swabs, bar soap, deodorant, DVDs, audio books, magazines or newspapers, puzzles, gift cards for movies or music redeemable online, men’s and women’s sports wear clothing, hand and foot warmers, and travel size products such as cream, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, cornstarch powder and foot powder.

The public is asked to refrain from donating scented hygienic products and canned foods.

“It’s good to help give back to our soldiers because they give us so much,” said Captain John Greeley of the 49th Precinct.
