Grocer’s gift cards help needy

The First Lutheran Church of Throggs Neck and Super Foodtown have teamed up to help out local families who may be going through tough economic times.

Super Foodtown, located at 2945 Bruckner Boulevard, has made a donation of $500 in gift cards for merchandise at the supermarket to the church’s drive to help needy families during the economic downturn.

“I just think that it is a good thing that the church is doing and we wanted to help out,” said director of store operations Harry Celentano. “We make contributions to many charitable and community organizations, including sponsoring little league teams and supporting different organizations doing good work.”

Celentano met with church member Elly Harrold on Wednesday, August 26 to donate ten $50 gift cards to the supermarket that will be distributed to families in need by the church.

Harrold said that the church was already distributing $100 gift cards to Super Foodtown for needy families in the area when the management of the supermarket heard about the what they were doing and decided to help out too.

Harrold also said that over the past few years many individuals and local groups in the Pelham Bay, Country Club, and Throggs Neck have assisted First Lutheran Church after the church saw attendance drop and operating costs soar. This is a way for the church to give back and say thank you to the community’s generosity.

For Celentano, the donation is an investment in the future.

“We anticipate being in this community for a long time, and anything that we could do to help people in the neighborhood is beneficial for both them and the store,” Celentano said.
