DEMOCRATIC PARTY NOMINEE FOR MAYOR

The Bronx Times and Bronx Times Reporter have followed mayoral candidates Bill Thompson and Tony Avella at City Hall, where Thompson is the comptroller and Avella a Queens councilman. We’ve observed the candidates in the Bronx, on the campaign trail. We’ve grilled Thompson and Avella in person, at the Brooklyn headquarters of the Community Newspaper Group.

The Bronx Times and Bronx Times Reporter select Thompson in the Democratic primary. The former deputy Brooklyn borough president and Board of Education president is thoughtful, capable and enthusiastic. Thompson has performed well as a two-term comptroller. He won’t deliver radical change.

Avella is the maverick candidate, ready to restructure how the city plans real estate development. The Queens candidate is a veteran legislator and a dedicated public servant.

But Thompson possesses an understanding of the city – neighborhood by neighborhood. Thompson knows education. Thompson boasts widespread support. He’s our pick for mayor in the Democratic primary.
