Bartow Pell Mansion Museum plans Fall Workshop Series: Collecting Basics

The Bartow Pell Mansion Museum will hold a Fall Workshop Series: Collecting Basics, in-depth workshops with antiques and fine art appraisers Nora Mazur and Patricia Dillon. The first three workshops focus on what you need to know to start collecting fine art, furniture, and silver. The series culminates with a visit to Doyle New York for a talk and preview of an upcoming auction of furniture and fine art. Admission is $15 each workshop or save $10 on all four for $50; members $10 each or $35 for all four workshops. Reservations required; space limited.

Part I, Fine Art: Wednesday, September 23, 7 to 8:30 p.m. An overview of paintings, prints, and drawings and the differences between the mediums in terms of value, conservation, and investment. Factors to consider before purchasing, trends in the marketplace, and collecting opportunities created by the recession.

Part II, Furniture: Thursday, October 1, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Important considerations when buying American, English, or Continental furniture. What roles do construction, patina, assembled or married objects, quality, and appropriate use of ornament play? Current trends and values are also addressed.

Part III, Silver: Thursday, October 15, 10:30 a.m. to noon. An exploration of American and English silver and silver plate from the 19th and 20th centuries. Different types of silver, country of origin, dating, value, as well as important American silver designers and manufacturers are discussed.

Part IV, Visit to Doyle New York: Monday, October 19, 11:30 a.m. A visit to Doyle New York with the experts. Louis Webre, Senior Vice President, previews the upcoming sale of Important English and Continental Furniture and Decorations including Old Master Paintings and Drawings. Participants will receive a complimentary sale catalogue.
