Wave Hill features tours, Accents in Bloom Trunk Show

Setting sail for Wave Hill, in the spirit of Columbus and Captain Henry Hudson, is a fine, if impractical, idea for the holiday weekend coming up.

Thursday, October 8; Saturday, October 10; Sunday, October 11: Wednesday, October 14; Thursday, October 15, Gallery Tour: Join an Exhibition Interpreter for one of our regularly scheduled tours of The Muhheakantuck in Focus: Contemporary artists look at “the river that flows both ways” through projects that explore the First Nations’ engagement with the river and the impact of Henry Hudson’s arrival. Also on view is Mauro Zamora’s installation in the Sunroom, a new series of paintings that feature imagery of nature thriving in densely developed urban areas. Tours take place Wednesdays and Thursdays at noon, and at 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Free with admission to the grounds. Glyndor Gallery, noon.

Friday, October 9: Nature Photography Series−Autumn In Focus: Session 3: Wave Hill’s brilliant autumn landscape provides inspiration to interpret the world around us through the lens of the camera. Explore creative techniques through demonstrations, outdoor shooting assignments and critiques, with nature photographer Benjamin Swett. Workshop series fee: $150. Friday, October 9: Memoir Writing–Seasonal Writing Series: Session 2: Oh, the stories you could share! Wave Hill is the perfect place to reflect on the past and to recall your own personal life experiences or family history. Learn from writing coach and former New York Times editor Joan Motyka a variety of techniques to structure your ideas and get your pen flowing. Writing series fee: $150. Saturday, October 10; Sunday, October 11: openhousenewyork Weekend: Annual, weekend program of public access to significant buildings and sites, a citywide celebration of the best at New York’s architecture, design, historical merit, diversity and culture. Join us garden walks, as well as for brunch on Saturday or Sunday, and special events in The Shop at Wave Hill. All events are free with admission to the grounds.

Saturday, October 10: Tai Chi Chuan: Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. Classes are led by Irving Yee, an active member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi Chuan School. Classes are held out-of-doors. Hear about the people who once called Wave Hill home, among them, Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt and Arturo Toscanini. Free with admission to the grounds. Meet At Perkins Visitor Center, 11 a.m.

Saturday, October 10: Accents In Bloom Trunk Show In The Shop At Wave Hill: Zachary Bloom returns to Wave Hill for a trunk show that celebrates the wonders of the fall season. The son of a stone cutter and bead wholesaler, Bloom used an exquisite strand of natural turquoise to make his first piece of jewelry, a gift for his wife and inspiration, Fabiana. He has gone on to showcase his innovative designs in museums, galleries and boutiques. Let Zachary help you select the perfect gift for a loved one−or yourself! The Shop At Wave Hill, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Discover how views, focal points, plant combinations, garden structures, paths and other design elements play key roles in the way Wave Hill’s gardens blend harmoniously with the natural beauty of the Hudson River. Saturday, October 10; Sunday, October 11: Family Art Project: A Garden Of Shapes: A Garden of Shapes/Un jardín de formas: Delight your eyes with circles and squares and crazy shapes that combine into glorious garden designs. Sketch a few. Then collage your own shapely, mixed-media garden design. Free with admission to the grounds. The Sally and Gilbert Kerlin Learning Center, 1 to 4 p.m.

Sunday, October 11; Tuesday, October 13: Yoga: Find refuge from city life by practicing seasonal yoga outdoors on the grounds of Wave Hill. Decrease stress and increase your energy by focusing on your posture, breath control and meditation. Classes are led by Neem Dewji, certified in Hatha and Therapeutic Yoga from The Yoga for Health Foundation, in Bedfordshire, England, and The Integral Yoga Institute in NYC. Sunday, October 11: Book-Signing In The Shop At Wave Hill: A Vermont-based artist and horticulturist, Lucinda Rooney’s creative approach to flowers has been featured in Victoria, Horticulture and Country Living, and she has appeared on the PBS garden series “The Victory Garden”, as well as on HGTV. She joins us to sign her new volume Bouquets with Personality, for which photographer Mick Hales provided the glorious images. Hales is the author of The Gardens of Wave Hill, a seasonal portrait of this garden oasis. Perkins Visitor Center, 2 P.M.
