Wounded Rams survive Archbishop Molloy

Pete McNamara saw the small army of Archbishop Molloy players march onto Murphy Field and felt a bit like Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn.

McNamara, who was missing seven players to a variety of ailments and one to a red-card suspension, figured he’s offer a truce of sorts to longtime Archbishop Molloy coach Andy Kostel before the opening kickoff.

Fordham Prep, which fell to Molloy, 1-0, in the title game last year, is still searching for their first win of the season and has three draws in their first four games. But McNamara saw a marked improvement from a team that was punished for defensive miscues in a 2-2 tie with rival Regis on Tuesday.

Molloy (2-0-2) had more scoring chances, but not enough, according to Kostel.

Greg Davis was robbed by Fordham Prep goalkeeper Christian Quinttus in the 34th minute and three minutes later, Michael Carnaccio put the ball off the post following Patrick O’Grady’s deflected shot.

Davis, one of the top seniors in the league, had another chance two minutes from full time, but his low shot from 22 yards was saved by Quinttus.

Fordham Prep’s best chance came on the hour mark when Nick Paganelli lined up a free kick from 25 yards and hit a bullet that Molloy goalkeeper Joe Ruocco dived to his left to parry away for a corner kick.

Fordham Prep nearly struck for the late winner after James Levantis fouled Sebastian Palomino in the 79th minute. But Mark Kramarchuk put his free kick from 24 yards over the crossbar.

Paganelli didn’t get the revenge he was looking for, but he was encouraged by his team’s performance against The Post’s top-ranked CHSAA team.
