Bronx veterans celebrate US Navy’s birthday at med center

A celebration of the 234th anniversary of the United States Navy was held in the lobby of the James. J. Peters VA Medical Center on Wednesday, October 14.

The “party” was the brainchild of Carmine Mezzacappa, a U.S. Navy veteran who requested that the V.A. allow him the privilege of throwing the celebration. The party also served as an information session for the VA’s many services, and took place in the lobby of the hospital.

The get-together included balloons, and brought out veterans from all branches of the military joining in a celebration Mezzacappa hopes will shine light on the needs of returning combat veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as from previous conflicts.

“This ‘Navy Day’ is a testimony and a tribute to all veterans, in all branches of the armed forces,” Mezzacappa stated. “It brings honor and awareness to the sacrifices made by the men and women who served with distinction to preserve our freedom.”

Mezzacappa stated that he held the birthday party as a salute to all veterans for their many contributions in making the United States a strong country and promoting democracy around the world.

James J. Peter’s Medical Center director Mary Ann Musumeci said in statement that she was happy to help the veterans put on the party.

“We are pleased to support our Navy veterans on their 234th anniversary,” Musumeci stated. “This medical center is a special place. The soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coastguard personnel that we serve here have earned our utmost respect. They have made enumerable sacrifices for all Americans, and it is our privilege to serve them in their time of need.”
