Walk of historic St. Mary’s Park

An walking tour of historic St. Mary’s Park and its 17th Century roots will be held on Sun., Nov. 8, 9:30 am. the tour will be led by Marcus Hickman. Meet in front of Optical City Xpress, corner of Melrose Avenue and E. 149th Street (next to the elevators for the #2 and #5 subway service).

The community surrounding St. Mary’s Park has roots deep in Bronx history. It was once part of the Jonas Bronck farm, settled in 1639. The park is important: it is one of six original Bronx parks, described by environmentalist John Mulally in 1887 as miniature loveliness.

To make reservations call the Bronx Historical Society at (718) 881-8900. Each tour costs $10 for BCHS members; $15 for non-members. These tours generally run for two hours.

Franz Joseph Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass featuring the choirs of Holy Family and St. Frances de Chantal, will be performed on Sun., Nov. 15, at 3 pm at St. Frances de Chantal Church, 190 Hollywood Avenue. The event is free.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts delivers the world of dance to the Bronx with Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company. Swirls of color and precise patterns of dance will fill the stage when the company makes a return visit on Sun., Nov. 15, at 6 pm at the Concert Hall at Lehman Center, 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West on the campus of Lehman College in the Bronx. This magnificent artistic group, named after Pavlo Virsky, has embraced the beauty of its native Ukraine, the wisdom of its people as well as the folk tradition of humor and optimism. It may seem that the peak of accomplishment and professionalism has been reached, but the Virsky Ukrainian National Dance Company under the direction of Myroslav Vantukh, Virsky’s disciple and great expert in folk traditions and ethnography in charge of the ensemble since 1980, is creating new dances, full of surprises and continues to delight the people of the world with wonderful Ukraine culture.

The ensemble has toured many different countries including Austria, England, Argentina, Bulgaria, Brazil, Belgium, Venezuela, Greece, Ecuador, Italy, India, Spain, Canada, Columbia, China, Cuba, Korea, Mexico, Mongolia, Germany, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Hungary, France, France, Czech Republic, Chile and Switzerland.
